Laboratory Testing Toolkit

COVID-19 testing is within the scope of practice for California dentists, and as of Oct. 8, 2021, dentists can apply for the requisite laboratory licensure to process rapid tests in the dental office. This toolkit provides step-by-step application instructions, reporting requirements plus guidance to help dentists determine whether administering rapid COVID-19 tests is appropriate for their practice.

This toolkit was created to help dentists determine whether administering COVID-19 tests in their office is appropriate for their practice. 

Step 1: Overview of Testing

In California, COVID-19 testing is within the scope of practice for dentists when used for screening for COVID-19 rather than providing a formal COVID-19 diagnosis.
