California’s Paid Family Leave program provides eight weeks of wage replacement benefits to workers who take time off from work to bond with a child within one year of birth or adoption or to care for a seriously ill child, spouse, parent, grandparent, sibling or domestic partner. Paid Family Leave is a wage replacement benefit of the state’s disability insurance program administered by the Employment Development Department.

The grant can be used to offset the increased costs associated with employees who are on leave. Such costs might include hiring new staff or training existing staff to cover the duties of the employee on leave, recruiting and marketing for open positions and other reasonable related costs.

Businesses are eligible to apply for the grant if they are registered to do business in California and have no more than 100 employees. Businesses with 1-50 employees, which applies to the great majority of dental practices in the state, may receive up to $2,000 per employee utilizing the leave. Businesses with more than 50 employees may receive grants up to $1,000 per employee.

Businesses must also have an active status with the California Secretary of State and an active California Employer Account Number. Businesses that do not know that number can find it on the EDD’s website or contact the EDD to obtain it.

The deadline to apply for the California Paid Family Leave Grant is May 31, 2024. Apply now and find more information in the FAQ.
