QUICK SUMMARY: A workshop on ergonomics and breathwork is the first recipient of the CDA Foundation’s Wellness Grant, which supports California dental schools’ events aimed at creating lasting impact on dental providers.

Stress beginning in dental school often leads to higher rates of depression and anxiety throughout dentists’ careers. To build sustainable self-care skills early on, the CDA Foundation launched a Wellness Grant for student-initiated events at California dental schools.

The Ergonomic Resilience & Breathwork for Dental Providers workshop is the first Wellness Grant recipient. UCLA dental students attended the June event, which was nominated for funding by a faculty member at the university.

By creating a welcoming and relaxing environment right on campus, the students were able to step away from the demands of clinic and focus on their own physical and mental well-being. In keeping with the grant’s focus on wellness education, skill-building and long-term integration, the workshop addressed three areas of support.

A focus on posture awareness, breathwork exercises, guided stretching

First, students learned practical ergonomic strategies, posture awareness techniques and simple breathwork exercises that can be incorporated into daily clinical practice to help reduce stress and physical strain. Guided stretching and movement exercises targeted areas commonly under strain in dentistry: the neck, shoulders and lower back. Next, a break for a healthy breakfast provided students an opportunity to connect socially. The concluding segment was a reflective art activity, allowing additional time to unwind, decompress and practice mindfulness.

Participants reported increased understanding of ergonomic risks

Student participants had very positive feedback, with many sharing that they felt more aware of the importance of self-care and felt comfortable applying the newly learned skills. They reported an increased understanding of ergonomic risk areas, improved confidence in using breathwork techniques and strong overall satisfaction with the session.

Wellness Grant funding is open to additional student-proposed events that promote wellness, connection and long-term professional sustainability within dental education. One grant is available for each dental school each year, and grants are awarded on a rolling basis. Applications will close when all funds available for the cycle have been awarded.
