ABOUT THIS PROGRAM

In this special study club offering, Jamison Spencer, DMD, MS will take you on a deep dive into the world of sleep apnea and its role in bruxism and how you can expand your treatment offering for those patients. The study club includes 3 pre-recorded videos, a hands-on workshop at CDA Presents Anaheim 2023, and two virtual follow-up treatment planning discussions.

LEARNING FORMAT

IN-PERSON + ONLINE

Enjoy a blend of hands-on workshops and convenient virtual sessions. You’ll learn with the same group of peers throughout the program, getting ample opportunity to connect with each other and your instructor.  

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

  • How to take a patient from the initial sleep apnea screening to the final follow up. 
  • How to select an appropriate appliance based on what will most likely work best for specific patients. 
  • How to take a bite registration for a custom oral appliance and fabricate a chairside morning occlusal guide. 

CLUB SESSIONS

Join all six sessions to complete the program and be eligible for full C.E. credit. Check individual sessions for dates, locations and details.

SESSION 1: Importance of a good night's sleep: The basics of normal sleep and sleep apnea in adults and children

Format: 1 hour on-demand video 
Dates: Online recordings available April 17, 2023 
  
In this first on-demand session, understand the basics of normal sleep and sleep disordered breathing, steps you can take to help yourself, your family and your patients get a good night's sleep, and how sleep apnea affects normal sleep.   

SESSION 2: Screening your patients and then what to do: The dentist's role in the diagnosis of sleep apnea 

Format: 1 hour on-demand video

In this second on-demand session, learn about the clinical aspects of screening your patients for sleep-related breathing disorders, including what to look for intraorally and what questions to ask the patient or parent, as well as how sleep apnea is ultimately diagnosed.   

SESSION 3: Oral appliance therapy: Choosing the best appliance for your patient and avoiding side effects

Format: 1 hour on-demand video

In the final on-demand session, the ultimate question of "what is the best appliance" will be answered, along with a straightforward method for appliance selection to help maximize outcomes and avoid side effects.   

SESSION 4: Dental Sleep Medicine Hands-On

Format: 3-hour workshop at CDA’s convention in Anaheim 
Date: May 20, 2023, at 8 a.m. - 11 a.m. or 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. (choose one) 
  
In this in-person, interactive workshop, in-depth lectures on all aspects of sleep medicine are combined with hands-on experience. Explore practical matters related to treatment of patients with obstructive sleep apnea, spanning initial screening, referral for diagnosis, appliance selection, records, fitting and follow up. Hands-on components will include appliance selection, bite registration and chairside technique for morning occlusal guide fabrication. 
 

  

SESSION 5: A virtual follow-up discussion with Dr. Spencer 

Format: 1 hour live online webinar 
Date: June 15, 2023, at 5:30 p.m. 
 
1 month after the workshop, a live Zoom meeting will allow you to discuss your sleep apnea treatment planning with Dr. Spencer and your peers. You will gain momentum in treating OSA patients at your practice. 

While the final two sessions are optional and no C.E. is offered, we highly recommend you take advantage of these times to round out your study club experience. You will have an opportunity to discuss sleep apnea treatment plans with Dr. Spencer and your peers.   
 

SESSION 6: A virtual follow-up discussion with Dr. Spencer

Format: 1 hour live online webinar 
Date: August 17, 2023, at 5:30 p.m. 
 
3 months after the program, a final live Zoom meeting will allow follow-up discussions regarding your sleep apnea treatment planning and progress with Dr. Spencer and your peers.  

While the final two sessions are optional and no C.E. is offered, we highly recommend you take advantage of these times to round out your study club experience. You will have an opportunity to discuss sleep apnea treatment plans with Dr. Spencer and your peers.
