QUICK SUMMARY: Three dentists are taking on new leadership roles with the Journal of the California Dental Association. As the fifth associate editor, longtime contributing author and reviewer Dr. Keith R. Boyer will strengthen the Journal's foundation with his knowledge as an endodontist and dental educator. The Journal also welcomes Drs. Peter Milgrom and Hiroe Ohyama to its editorial board. Read what Dr. Boyer hopes to accomplish in his new role.

With expertise spanning clinical practice, education, research and innovation, three dentists are taking on new leadership roles with the CDA Journal. The CDA Board of Directors approved the appointments at the board’s July 14 board meeting.

Dental educator brings an endodontist’s knowledge to Journal team

Keith R. Boyer, DDS, is joining the editorial team as the Journal’s fifth associate editor.

“Our associate editors are the cornerstone of the Journal’s strong foundation,” said Editor-in-Chief Kerry K. Carney, DDS, CDE. “The knowledge Dr. Boyer brings as an endodontist and educator will help strengthen that foundation and fill a knowledge gap in the editorial team’s already broad range of specialties.”

Boyer is no stranger to the CDA Journal. A longtime contributor as an author, co-author and reviewer, his first paper published by the Journal was on recare intervals in 2018. He also guest edited  the collection “Saving Teeth for Life” in 2023.

He says working with the collection’s authors was a highlight of the role.

“I most enjoyed collaborating with the authors—all experts in their respective areas—to create a relevant and interesting collection of articles about saving teeth,” Boyer said.

Broadening the Journal’s coverage of specialties

Now, as associate editor, he looks forward to partnering with fellow editors to curate high-quality educational content. Continuous learning, he says, is critical to growing the dental profession.

“Although I anticipate a lot of work, I accepted the invitation to join the editorial team because it’s an important opportunity to serve and shape oral healthcare,” he said.

Boyer appreciates that the Journal publishes papers on topics in various dental specialties and areas of interest, a unique approach for a dental publication. He wants to help the Journal broaden coverage of his own specialty.

“As a board-certified endodontist, I hope that contemporary endodontics will be reflected in the Journal, sharing with dentists how to predictably save more teeth,” he said.

Then and now: Boyer reflects on dental education and family

Boyer attended undergrad and dental school at University of the Pacific. After completing endodontic residency at University of Pennsylvania, he practiced in Philadelphia and Sacramento before moving to Southern California and transitioning to full-time education. A clinical and preclinical endodontics instructor since 2013, he is now an associate professor and coordinator of endodontic care at WesternU.

The Roseville native enjoys spending time with his wife, Jamie Parado, DDS, a pediatric dentist and an author published by the Journal, and their two daughters. He also finds time to pursue a few hobbies.

“Though it sounds cliché, I enjoy hiking, traveling, and trying new foods,” Boyer said.

Other members of the associate editor team are Drs. Benjamin Chaffee, Ruchi Sahota, Marisa Watanabe, Karisa Yamamoto and Andrew Young. Boyer is taking over the associate editor seat vacated when Dr. Lindsey Robinson moved from AE to senior editor in 2025.

East and West coast editorial board additions

The Journal welcomes two longtime contributors, Peter Milgrom, DDS, and Hiroe Ohyama, DMD, MMSc, PhD, to its editorial board. Both have served the Journal as guest editors, authors and reviewers.

“They each bring a wealth of knowledge to the new roles with the Journal, and we’re honored to have them onboard,” said Dr. Carney.

Dr. Milgrom is emeritus professor of Oral Health Sciences at the University of Washington and an internationally recognized clinical scholar and innovator whose career spans more than 50 years. He is best known for creating Washington state’s Access to Baby and Child Dentistry program and helping introduce fluoride varnish and silver diamine fluoride in the United States. He also co-created the Dental Fears Research Clinic at the University of Washington and has authored more than 350 research papers and books.

Dr. Ohyama is an associate professor and predoctoral director of operative dentistry at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. An accomplished clinician-scientist and educator, she has made significant contributions to student-centered scholarship and published more than 70 articles in peer-reviewed journals. Her work has earned national recognition for excellence in research, teaching and patient care.

Meet Milgrom and Ohyama and the rest of the Journal editorial board in an article publishing in CDA’s newsroom in August.
