CURES and Opioid Pain Management

All dentists who are authorized to prescribe, order, administer, furnish or dispense controlled substances are required to register in the Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System (CURES), a database of controlled substances dispensed to patients in California. Also, as of October 2, 2018, the dentists must check a patient’s history in CURES when prescribing, ordering, administering, furnishing, or dispensing a controlled substance to a patient as part of the patient's treatment for a surgical procedure, if the quantity of the controlled substance exceeds a five-day supply of the controlled substance to be used in accordance with the directions for use and when prescribing a refill.
