Significant stress that begins in dental school can continue throughout dentists’ professional careers, often leading to higher rates of burnout, anxiety and depression. And while students may find and use coping strategies, institutional support is needed to mitigate lasting impacts to mental health and professional well-being.
Recognizing that provider well-being promotes oral health for all, the CDA Foundation, the California Dental Association’s nonprofit arm, has launched a Wellness Grant to support events at California dental schools.
The new grant reflects the Foundation’s goals for sustainable and meaningful professional development in dentistry. Total funding of up to $300 per school will be awarded each academic year to select student-initiated events focused on wellness education, skill-building or long-term integration.
What events may be eligible for the grant?
- Wellness-focused C.E. courses, lunch & learns or workshops. Licensed, structured education on topics such as burnout prevention, ergonomics and stress management teach skills students will carry into practice.
- Sponsored webinar watch parties with refreshments. Offsetting daily barriers, like time and food constraints, helps students more easily access C.E. and expert insights on well-being.
- Peer wellness ambassador training programs. A sustainable wellness culture equips students with leadership skills, resources and ongoing ways to support each other.
Events that are geared toward entertainment, recreation, swag giveaways and other short-term benefits are not eligible for grant funds. Though many of these events do help support student connection and morale, they are not oriented toward the programs’ education and sustained wellness goals.
What is the application process?
Online applications are now open to California dental students. The brief application should include proposed wellness event details, including how the event relates to education and professional development, promotes sustainable impact and integrates with existing curriculum or student life. Partnerships or school department co-sponsorships to expand or enhance events are welcome.
Grants will be awarded on a rolling basis, and applications will close when all funds available for the cycle have been awarded.
Dental students are encouraged to propose events that support their peers and foster long-term wellness strategies. Learn more about Foundation programs and wellness initiatives at cdafoundation.org.
