Interest in TM disorders has gone through evolutionary and revolutionary changes. Consensus on the treatment of TMD has been slowly developing but there is still great controversy over appropriate treatment for these problems. This course will provide training commensurate with standards of care that have been developing in the academic communities around the world over the last 3 decades. This course is designed to offer a comprehensive experience for the practicing dentist that will connect the medical and dental aspects of TMD. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: Sherwin Arman\, DMD\, MPH; Tara Aghaloo\, DDS\, MD\, PhD; Dennis Bailey\, DDS; Tahani Garguri\, DDS; Donald Goodman\, PhD\, CCHt; Bernadette Jaeger\, DDS \n\n\n\n48 CE Units

SUMMARY:Dental Acupuncture and Integrative Oral Medicine (Session 2 of 4)
DESCRIPTION:Patients are increasingly seeking out acupuncture as an adjunct to standard pain control measures. This is becoming more relevant in the setting of the current opiate epidemic\, as acupuncture provides a non-pharmacologic approach to reduce pain. This is also important in the realms of sleep medicine and orofacial pain where pharmacotherapy is riddled with a high side effect burden and risk of abuse. Despite the WHO having recommended acupuncture for treatments on headache\, facial pain\, neuralgia and insomnia\, few programs are available for dentists who wish to seek training. \n\n\n\nUCLA School of Dentistry is offering a unique\, evidence-based program to train dentists in the basics of dental acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory. By combining TCM principles with Western allopathic Medicine modalities\, participants will feel comfortable diagnosing and understanding the pathophysiology of both acute and chronic oral pain conditions from an integrative East-West perspective. Moreover\, participants will learn basic acupuncture treatments that can be safely delivered to patients. \n\n\n\n4 Session Course at UCLA February 2-4\, 2024 March 8-10\, 2024 April 19-21\, 2024 May 31- Jun 2\, 2024 \n\n\n\nThis course consists of 50 hours of didactic and 30 hours of clinical training including instruction on the following subjects: -Theoretical foundation of acupuncture\, with emphasis on current physiological concepts as they relate to traditional -Chinese medicine -Acupuncture anatomy and physiology -Acupuncture techniques\, including instruction in the use of needling techniques; moxibustion\, electroacupuncture and other noninvasive techniques for stimulating acupuncture points; precautions (e.g. sterilization of needles); contraindications and complications\, including adverse systemic effects -Application of acupuncture to the practice of dentistry \n\n\n\nKenneth E. SUMMARY:Suturing Techniques and Principles
DESCRIPTION:Surgical procedures in dentistry are becoming much more commonplace\, where all dentists must be well-versed in basic and advanced suturing techniques. Whether performing a simple interrupted suture after draining a tooth abscess\, or releasing the periosteum to close a large incision after alveolar ridge augmentation\, many of the principles of tissue handling\, instrumentation\, and possible complications are the same. This course will review medical and local factors that can affect wound healing and review principles of suturing. Specific hands-on workshops will also be included to learn flap design\, basic and advanced suturing techniques\, focusing on tension-free closure\, and choosing appropriate suture materials. This course will make the participant more comfortable and confident in their suturing abilities\, allowing them to incorporate more surgical procedures into their daily practice. \n\n\n\nCourse Topics: \n\n\n\n\nReview wound healing and principles of suturing\n\n\n\nChoosing the best suture size and material\n\n\n\nInterrupted vs. continuous suturing; horizontal and vertical mattress suturing; figure-of-eight; sling suturing\, and others\n\n\n\nSuturing techniques for extraction sockets\, bone grafting\, implants\, soft tissue grafting

SUMMARY:Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF)
DESCRIPTION:Platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) is an autogenous matrix derived from the concentration of the patient’s blood platelets. A simplified chairside procedure results in the production of a fibrin membrane that is capable of stimulating the release of many important growth factors involved during wound healing processes that take place after surgery. This course will provide lectures and a hands-on laboratory session to become knowledgeable in the use of the L-PRF technology. \n\n\n\nLearning Topics \n\n\n\n\nBlood draw technique\n\n\n\nBiological principles of L-PRF\n\n\n\nCase selection and planning\n\n\n\nSurgical techniques\n\n\n\nPRF preparation techniques\n\n\n\nManagement of complications and post-operative care\n\n\n\nUse and creation of PRF from start to finish\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop Exercises \n\n\n\n\nGrowth Factors in Implant Dentistry\n\n\n\nSoft tissue management\n\n\n\nComplications and management\n\n\n\nOptimizing outcome
