SUMMARY:Goldilocks and the Osteoporotic Patient: Avoiding undertreatment of dental disease is the patient at risk for MRONJ
DESCRIPTION:Anti-resorptive medications provide life-saving and life-enhancing benefits to patients with certain cancers\, osteoporosis\, and other bone metabolism conditions. Inadequate treatment of dental disease in this patient population may occur due to patient and provider fears of Medication Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaws (MRONJ). This course will review key anti-resorptive pharmacology and physiology\, strategies to determine and mitigate risks of developing MRONJ\, referral guidelines\, general principles of MRONJ management\, and abundant patient cases to help participants confidently engage in shared decision-making with their patients.

Dental professionals are often the first to observe signs of dysfunctional oral habits\, mouth breathing\, low tongue posture\, and atypical swallowing patterns\, yet many clinicians lack a systematic approach to screening and referral. \n\n\n\nThis course will review the etiology and clinical presentation of OMDs and provide practical screening strategies that can be incorporated into routine dental examinations.Participants will learn to identify red flags associated with airway compromise\, sleep-disordered breathing\, malocclusion\, and temporomandibular dysfunction.Guidance will also be provided on interdisciplinary collaboration and appropriate referral pathways.
