Video: Woman sees smile for first time in 20 years

Carolyn had been missing most of her teeth for more than 20 years. With no molars, eating was difficult and she had to rotate which side of her mouth she chewed food on based on pain level.

At one point, she pulled some of her teeth out herself.

Working in customer service, Carolyn said not having a smile has impacted her employability as she has been trying to get a job now for more than three years. “As soon as you smile, then you don’t get the job,” she said. In the meantime, she has been taking care of her 83-year-old mother and hoping her newly instated Denti-Cal benefits would help her repair her smile.

Instead of depending on the state’s broken Denti-Cal system, Carolyn drove to CDA Cares in Sacramento after seeing the event on the news. It wasn’t long before Janice Scott, DDS, and CDA Cares lab technicians Doug Wareham, Alan Wareham and Eric Wright helped provide her with a new set of dentures and restored her self-esteem. Volunteer technicians in the dental lab area worked to provide 377 complete and partial dentures and repairs over the two-day dental clinic.

See Carolyn’s reaction to her new smile.
