TDIC expands business to additional states

In the insurance industry, consistent and sustainable growth ensures a diversified premium base and financial stability to support policyholders. It’s a business philosophy that’s guided The Dentists Insurance Company for more than 35 years and has informed the company’s recent expansion. TDIC recently announced the purchase of three dentist-centric professional liability insurance businesses from an Oregon-based company, Moda, Inc., resulting in an extension of TDIC’s dentist-focused exceptional products and services to more than 4,500 policyholders in five additional states. The purchase of Dentists Benefits Insurance Company (DBIC), Dentists Benefits Corporation (DBC) and Northwest Dentists Insurance Company (NORDIC) means more robust support for all policyholders and allows TDIC to follow its principle of focusing solely on protecting dentists. As a result of this latest business expansion, TDIC now serves nearly 25,000 policyholders in 15 states.

“TDIC is dedicated to providing the highest quality products and services to our policyholders, and, with this sale finalized, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to serve our colleagues in additional states,” said TDIC Board Chair Steven Kend, DDS. “We look forward to earning their loyalty.”

TDIC’s successful expansion has been years in the making. As part of a strategy to diversify risk, TDIC began writing policies outside of California in 1992, a diversification that provided a broader premium base for TDIC and further stabilized the financial performance of the company. About a decade ago, the CDA House of Delegates took action to prepare TDIC to acquire other dentist insurance companies when sound business opportunities arose. The TDIC Board of Directors learned about a year ago that Moda, Inc. was in a position to sell the companies, which aligned with the expansion plans.

“We’re excited that this expansion extends TDIC’s exceptional customer service and products to these additional policyholders,” said CDA President Clelan Ehrler, DDS, MS. “These dentists will be joining 19,000 colleagues who have already chosen TDIC to protect their professional and practice needs.”

In addition to offering a comprehensive suite of coverages designed exclusively for dentists — professional and business liability, commercial property, workers’ compensation and employment practices liability products — TDIC also provides expert guidance, resources and publications on risk management. TDIC serves dentists in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Illinois, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, North Dakota and Pennsylvania. The acquisition extends TDIC’s footprint into Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Tennessee and Washington.

TDIC was started by dentists in 1980. The company’s financial strength and stability are reflected in the “A” rating it has earned from A.M. Best for 23 consecutive years.
