Support CDA Foundation programs through three unique events

This summer, outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy great meals and a mix of activities among friends and peers in three distinct landscapes — all while helping to support the CDA Foundation’s two flagship programs: CDA Cares, the volunteer-run dental clinic that provides dental services at no charge to Californians, and the Student Loan Repayment Grant, awarded annually to a recent dental school graduate who has chosen a career in community health.

Read on for a brief description of each event and details on how to save your spot.

Targeting Smiles – South

New and experienced participants are welcome to join Targeting Smiles, a friendly sporting clays fundraising tournament. Michael Marshall, DDS, Leonard Raimondo, DDS, and Jeffrey Jones, DDS, are hosting the event, which takes place Saturday, June 23, at Moore N’ Moore Sporting Clays in Sylmar, Calif.

Perched on the eastern edge of the San Fernando Valley among the canyons and hills of the Angeles National Forest, Moore N’ Moore Sporting Clays boasts “the only NSCA course in Southern California that has great natural terrain.”

Check-in is at 8:30 a.m. with the competition starting at 9:30 a.m. following a short orientation. Participants break at noon for a lunch of tri-tip, chicken and salads. The event concludes at 2 p.m. after the raffle, auction and awards.

Participants are encouraged to bring guests along to watch the competition, enjoy lunch and join the raffle.

Sept. 16–18
Baker City, Ore.
Ken Sanford Memorial Ride

Scenic Baker City, Oregon, is the setting for the 10th annual Ken Sanford Memorial Ride, named in honor of Ken Sanford, DDS, an organizer of the inaugural fundraising ride in 2009.

A formal ride isn’t scheduled for this year’s event, but maps and suggested routes are available for those who choose to explore Eastern Oregon by motorcycle, car or bicycle at their own pace and with whomever they wish. Craft beer tasting, brewery touring and shopping are located within blocks of the Geiser Grand Hotel, the preferred accommodation, while hiking trails, fishing, kayaking and whitewater rafting on the Powder River are all within easy reach.

Also new for this year’s event: Instead of formal C.E., each “rider” will informally provide 30 to 60 minutes of C.E. to the group, based on the participant’s subject-matter expertise.

No formal event fee (suggested contribution of $150-$1,200 to the CDA Foundation)

To register, email Ron Mead, DDS, or call 805.801.1816, or visit the event’s Facebook page for more information.

One hundred percent of the proceeds from all three events support CDA Cares and the Student Loan Repayment Grant, which together provide volunteer dental services to local communities, support dentists working in community health and help to educate the public and policymakers about the importance of good oral health. The success of both of these programs depends on ongoing generous financial donations. Learn more about the programs at cdafoundation.org.

The CDA Foundation has published its annual report highlighting the health, hope and happiness provided to individuals in 2017 through ongoing Foundation programs, including two student loan repayment grants, the Dental Materials and Supplies Grant and CDA Cares — the volunteer-run dental clinic held twice annually in communities throughout California.

Applications are being accepted as of May 1 for the CDA Foundation’s 2018 Student Loan Repayment Grant. Given annually since 2002, the grant program helps recent dental school graduates offset the financial burden of student loan debt while they pursue careers in public or community health. The award provides up to $35,000 per year and a maximum of $105,000 over three years to be applied toward repaying the dentists’ educational loan.
