Protecting your future with disability insurance

We are entering May, which is Disability Insurance Awareness Month, and a good time for dentists to make sure that their futures are protected.

Disability Insurance Awareness Month was named by the LIFE Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping consumers make smart insurance decisions to safeguard their families’ financial futures.

TDIC Insurance Solutions is encouraging dental professionals to consider the important role disability insurance plays in an individual’s financial security.

“Dentists should think of it this way: If you for some reason lost your paycheck, what impact would it have on your life and your family’s life?” said Patrick Nelle, an insurance agent with TDIC. “That is what Disability Insurance Awareness Month is all about, stopping to think about protecting your future.”

Dentists who do not have disability insurance and/or business overhead expense insurance, are one accident away from having to deal with insurmountable office overhead expenses and the possibility of being forced into closing their practice.

TDIC recommends that dentists consider individual disability insurance coverage over group coverage. While individual policies are more expensive, they generally provide much greater coverage, with fewer restrictions, over the long term.

TDIC offers policyholders true “own occupation” products, or disability coverage that pays the policyholder benefits when he or she can no longer perform all the day-to-day duties of their present or “own” occupation.

In addition to own occupation insurance options, TDIC policies differ from other carriers’ policies in a number of important ways, including:

  • Recovery benefits;
  • Future increase option;
  • Partial disability benefit rider;
  • Partial disability income loss; and
  • Non-cancellable and guaranteed renewable.

“Life is unpredictable. Make sure you put yourself in a good position should an unfortunate event happen,” Nelle said.
