Nominate a dentist for Humanitarian Award by June 30

Established in 2008, the CDA Foundation Humanitarian Award recognizes California dentists who have distinguished themselves through a lifetime of outstanding unselfish leadership and contributions to fellow human beings in the field of dentistry.

Jeffrey Moses, DDS, recipient of the 2016 award, is founder and current president of the Smiles International Foundation and has established and led hundreds of surgical mission projects since 1985 as part of his work with the nonprofit. “In my 48-year career … I have seen very few colleagues so beneficent, so giving and unselfish in providing very specialized services to anyone and everyone in need of his talent,” said Moses’ nominating peer, who commented on his “below the radar, humble approach” to building clinics and providing services that include major cleft-palate surgery.

Other past recipients include Andrew Soderstrom, DDS; Russell Webb, DDS; Terry Tanaka, DDS; Irvin Silverstein, DDS, MSEd; Guillermo Vicuña, DDS; and Charles Goldstein, DDS, MPH.

Among the attributes that nominees must exemplify are:

  • Contribute significantly to alleviate human suffering and improving the quality of life and oral health of those served.
  • Show, through the scope of work undertaken, a lifetime commitment to humanity and selflessness in regard to direct personal or organizational gain or profit.
  • Establish a legacy that is of ongoing value and benefit to others.

Any nominee must hold a California dental license (active or retired) and the nominator must be either a CDA member or a component dental society executive director.
