Humanitarian Award recognizes dentists for volunteer commitment, leadership

Nominate an active or retired dentist for 2019 award

April 1 through June 30, CDA members or component dental society executive directors can nominate a California-licensed dentist for the 2019 CDA Foundation Humanitarian Award.

Each year, the Humanitarian Award recognizes one individual for (1) a lifetime of volunteer commitment and leadership that have had a broad impact on oral health and the improvement of the human condition or (2) actions that have enabled the dental profession to respond more fully to the needs of people at the local, state, national or international level.

Nominees may be active or retired and should exemplify specific humanitarian ideals and attributes, including:

  • Contributes significantly to alleviate human suffering and improve the quality of life and oral health of those served
  • Demonstrates a lifetime of significant leadership and outstanding humanitarian volunteer accomplishments
  • Establishes a legacy that is of ongoing value and benefit to others
  • Shows a lifetime’s commitment to humanity and selflessness in regard to direct personal or organizational gain or profit
  • Creates interventions and awareness about the impact that illness has on the physical, emotional, social and spiritual lives of patients and their families

Now in its 11th year, the Humanitarian Award is one of several grants and awards given annually by the Foundation, the philanthropic arm of CDA, to support dental professionals and community-based organizations across the state. Herbert Yee, DDS, received the 2018 Humanitarian Award. Dr. Yee practiced dentistry in Sacramento for 54 years.

“He had the vision that many of us lack. Along the way, my father’s love for people influenced all who came in contact with him,” said Yee’s son, H. Wesley Yee, DDS, who nominated him for the award. (Read more about Dr. Yee in the December 2018 Update.)

The 2019 award recipient will be recognized at a CDA event and in various CDA and Foundation publications.
