Typically, these cases stem from patients who are upset over unplanned expenses, treatment plans they consider unnecessary, failure to achieve expected results from cosmetic procedures or a dentist’s refusal to practice outside the standard of care when a patient attempts to dictate treatment.
Nonprofit organizations can receive up to $25K in dental materials and supplies

Nonprofit organizations can apply now through March 31 for the CDA Foundation’s Dental Materials & Supplies Grant. In partnership with Henry Schein Cares, the program provides between $5,000 and $25,000 of in-kind goods per year for two years to selected organizations. These goods are deemed necessary for dental operations and oral health services.

A broad coalition of dentists, physicians, and public health advocates announced their support for a package of bills aimed at reducing consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and ensuring that corporations like The Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo Inc. stop targeting low-income communities and pay their fair share of public health costs.
CURES registration requirement also applies to current electronic prescribers

Dentists who prescribe controlled substances electronically or through written prescription must be registered with CURES 2.0, California’s Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System. The registration deadline was July 1, 2016. If not in compliance with the registration requirement, prescribers should register now.

Student loan debt is one of the largest financial hurdles a dentist may face. The average educational debt for all indebted graduates in the class of 2018 for U.S. public and private dental schools was $251,869 and $326,133, respectively.

State program expands provider incentives to new counties

Dentists in 26 counties have a new opportunity to participate in the Dental Transformation Initiative to help improve dental health for low-income children enrolled in the Medi-Cal Program while receiving enhanced reimbursement by meeting specific incentive metrics. As part of California's 1115 waiver, the DTI focuses on high-value care, improved access to dental care, and the use of performance measures to improve the program through four “domains.”
Mobile app from ADSA can assist dentists during medical emergencies

A new app developed by the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology emphasizes the early detection of and quick response to medical emergencies that can occur in the dental office. The app allows dentists and their staff to keep track of drug doses and expiration dates and use patient information to calculate personalized drug doses. Crisis checklists assist in providing appropriate interventions with flow charts that evaluate emergency events.

TDIC's informed consent form helps dentists follow law when prescribing opioids to minors

The Dentists Insurance Company has developed a resource to help prescribers follow a new requirement when prescribing Schedule II drugs to minors. Beginning Jan. 1, 2019, before a prescriber issues the first prescription to a minor for a controlled substance containing an opioid, the prescriber must discuss specific information with the minor or the minor’s parent or guardian. The new form, “Consent to Prescribe an Opioid to a Minor,” covers the required discussion items.
Security risk assessment tool updated for smaller practices

All HIPAA-covered entities and their business associates are required to conduct an initial comprehensive security risk assessment to identify “potential risks and vulnerabilities to the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of electronic protected health information. Small- to medium-sized health care practices with one to 10 providers now have an upgraded tool that is specifically designed to assist them with completing this assessment.
New opioid policy furthers CDA's efforts to reduce abuse, misuse

Appreciative patients share stories of pain relieved, smiles restored

In just over a month, CDA Cares volunteers will deliver no-cost dental services to an estimated 1,950 individuals who experience barriers to care. Over two days, March 8-9, at the Solano County Fairgrounds in Vallejo, Calif., dentists, hygienists, lab technicians, dental assistants and other professionals will volunteer their services and time, providing cleanings, extractions, root canals, dentures, triage and oral health education. The Foundation still seeks volunteers in all clinical areas, especially oral surgeons, lab techs and nurses and physicians for medical triage.
