CDA Foundation grant and scholarship deadlines approaching

The CDA Foundation offers financial support for oral health programs and dental education statewide. In this way, funding reaches local communities where it's needed most.

Numerous grants and scholarships are available throughout the year with various deadlines and submission periods. Currently, the CDA Foundation is accepting applications for the following programs:

Bettie Underwood Dental Assisting Scholarship (application deadline March 31) Provides a $1,000 scholarship to a student enrolled in a California dental assisting program. Recipients are selected based on financial need, academic achievement and a strong desire for a career in the dental field. Bettie Underwood left in her estate a wish to support students in the field of oral health, specifically dental assisting. Underwood was an outstanding leader in dental assisting in California and the nation. She served on the original AB 1455 committee that paved the legislation for the Registered Dental Assistant in California and proudly proclaimed that once the legislation was enacted, she received RDA certificate #4. She was president of the Northern California Dental Assistants Association and a long-time member of the California Dental Assistants Teachers Association.

Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni Faculty Award (application deadline March 31) Acknowledges and supports eligible faculty affiliated with one of the state's six dental schools for their exceptional leadership, innovation, collaboration, compassion, philanthropic spirit and integrity in dental education. Arthur A. Dugoni, DDS, MSD, has held numerous leadership positions in organized dentistry including president of the American Dental Association, American Dental Association Foundation, American Association of Dental Schools and American Dental Education Association. A graduate of San Francisco’s College of Physicians and Surgeons (the forerunner of University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry), he is credited with the development and management of many innovations that elevated UOP to national prominence, including the enhancement of the humanistic model of education.

Dental Materials and Supplies Grant (application deadline March 31) Works in partnership with Henry Schein Cares to support nonprofit organizations with the donation of dental supplies and materials necessary for dental operations and oral health services. Nonprofit organizations, such as the UC San Diego Student-Run Free Dental Clinic and Ravenswood Family Health Center, have been recipients of the award and received dental supplies that helped allow them to provide dental care for underserved people in their communities. Since its inception, more than 100 nonprofit organizations have received in excess of $3.5 million in supplies, helping provide dental care for nearly 300,000 people and $45 million in services.

Crowns for Kids Grant (application deadline April 1) Provides financial awards to CDA component dental societies, or local nonprofit organizations who partner with the local CDA component dental society, to implement oral health projects exclusively for underserved children ages 0-18 years in California. Projects must address one or more of the following objectives: preventive care, consumer education, restorative care, fluoridation, or other programs that clearly demonstrate methods for increasing access to oral health care.

Latinos for Dental Careers Scholarship (application deadline May 31) Made possible through the Foundation’s partnership with the Latinos for Dental Careers (LDC) and provides awards for eligible dental, dental hygiene and international students. The scholarship award supports individuals of Latino descent who are enrolled full time in a dental program (including hygiene) at one of the California dental schools.
