Provider dispute process offers fair, fast and cost-effective resolution

Simply asking a plan to reconsider a decision does not initiate the provider dispute mechanism. A request made by phone call or email or otherwise not made according to the plan’s established procedure will be treated as an informal appeal, which should be used only once. If it does not result in resolution, the dentist should file an appeal through the provider dispute resolution process established by the dental plan.

The next DEA National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is set for Saturday, Oct. 27, and more than 300 locations in California are prepared to help people dispose of unused prescription drugs safely and anonymously. Health care providers can encourage their patients and others to dispose of prescription drugs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Patients should also be made aware that they can also dispose of unused prescription drugs year-round at designated locations.

Disaster assistance available for Denti-Cal providers, beneficiaries

Denti-Cal providers and beneficiaries in nine counties impacted by the Carr and Cranston fires will receive processing exceptions to expedite replacement of removable dental appliances, a special Denti-Cal Bulletin states. According to the August Bulletin, claims will be accepted without requiring prior authorization and will not be rejected due to frequency limitations for subsequent removable appliances for eligible beneficiaries.
Employment separation in the dental practice: How to prepare

Every employee’s employment life cycle ends eventually, whether due to resignation, retirement, termination or other reason. In the dental office, any employee who separates should do so in a structured and professional manner with minimum disruption to the patients, staff and practice. Still, depending on what triggers an employee’s departure, separation can be an awkward situation for employers to navigate. Such discomfort can be lessened if clear policies and practices are in place.
Proposition 65 notice requirement takes effect in August

No later than Aug. 30, 2018, dental practices that employ 10 or more employees must post at the entrance of the office the new Proposition 65 warning notice, unless the practice chooses instead to provide a warning with an informed consent form. The form must be signed by the patient prior to exposure to the chemicals regulated by Proposition 65.

Dental professionals impacted by wildfires can apply for disaster relief grant

To help dental professionals in need, the CDA Foundation has established a Disaster Relief Grant for individuals — a one-time, single-installment grant that provides financial assistance of up to $5,000 per California dentist, dental staff member currently employed in the dental field or CDA component dental society staff member. The grant is for immediate and emergency needs as a direct result of the 2018 California wildfires.
FDA warns against use of OTC benzocaine teething products

The FDA has taken action to stop the use of over-the-counter benzocaine oral health products for young children, stating that the products “pose serious safety risks, especially those with no demonstrated benefit.” In addition to warning consumers that these products, which are intended for the temporary relief of sore gums due to teething, pose a serious risk to infants and children, the administration has asked companies to stop selling the products for such use.
