Physical theft most common data breach in practices

The most common type of data breaches in health care settings, including dental practices, is physical breaches. This is unique when compared to other industries. Specifically, more than half of the data breaches in health care settings are a result of devices being physically stolen from a practice, car, home or elsewhere according to the California Department of Justice.
What dentists need to know about new CURES system

All dentists who are authorized to prescribe, order, administer, furnish or dispense controlled substances must register for the Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System (CURES) by Jan. 1, 2016. CDA Update staff asked the Department of Justice about the new CURES 2.0 system and what dentists should do to register and ensure their systems are compatible.
FCC: Dentists must get consent to make billing calls

Dental practices now must obtain authorization from a patient to call him or her on his or her cellphone to discuss account and insurance information, according to a recent ruling. A July 10 order by the Federal Communications Commission, interpreting a rule it promulgated in 2013, is cause for CDA to advise dental practices to ensure their policies and procedures for communications using patients’ cellphone numbers is in compliance with the law.

OSHA updates eyewash station resource

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recently updated its resource for maintaining eyewash stations in the dental practice. The OSHA Infosheet states that the ANSI standard for eyewashes specifies that eyewashes must be capable of delivering tepid flushing fluid to the eyes not less than 1.5 liters per minute (0.4 gpm) for 15 minutes after a single movement and subsequent hands-free operation.

FDA revises label warning for NSAIDs

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is strengthening an existing label warning that non-aspirin nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) increase the chance of a heart attack or stroke. The drug facts labels for over-the-counter, non-aspirin NSAIDs already contain information on heart attack and stroke risk.

Online license renewal system to go live this year

The Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) is set to launch a new computer licensing system for dentists, hygienists and assistants in 2015. Known as the BreEZe system, it will allow dental professionals to apply for or renew their licenses online, pay with a credit card, track the status of an application or licensing request, submit address changes and obtain proof of license status.
California making strides in dental care measurement

As the dental insurance marketplace continues to increase focus on improved quality of care, accountability and value, California’s Health Benefit Exchange (Covered California) has taken the first steps in further ensuring Californians receive quality dental care. Specifically, it has announced that it will require all dental plans offering coverage through the Exchange to adopt the Dental Quality Alliance’s (DQA) Pediatric Quality Measures Set.

Recently, CDA has received an increase in calls about these types of reviews by the dental plans. CDA, anti-tobacco coalition gear up for special session

The Save Lives California coalition that CDA is a member of continues to move forward in its efforts to fight tobacco use during this year’s special legislative session on health care. The special session will resume when the Legislature returns from its summer recess on Aug. 17 and will include consideration of the coalition’s proposal to increase the state’s tobacco tax by $2 per pack, which would provide additional funding for the Medi-Cal program as well as smoking prevention and education programs.
