SUMMARY:Dental Acupuncture and Integrative Oral Medicine (Session 1 of 4)
DESCRIPTION:Patients are increasingly seeking out acupuncture as an adjunct to standard pain control measures. This is becoming more relevant in the setting of the current opiate epidemic\, as acupuncture provides a non-pharmacologic approach to reduce pain. This is also important in the realms of sleep medicine and orofacial pain where pharmacotherapy is riddled with a high side effect burden and risk of abuse. Despite the WHO having recommended acupuncture for treatments on headache\, facial pain\, neuralgia and insomnia\, few programs are available for dentists who wish to seek training. \n\n\n\nUCLA School of Dentistry is offering a unique\, evidence-based program to train dentists in the basics of dental acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory. By combining TCM principles with Western allopathic Medicine modalities\, participants will feel comfortable diagnosing and understanding the pathophysiology of both acute and chronic oral pain conditions from an integrative East-West perspective. Moreover\, participants will learn basic acupuncture treatments that can be safely delivered to patients. \n\n\n\n4 Session Course at UCLA February 2-4\, 2024 March 8-10\, 2024 April 19-21\, 2024 May 31- Jun 2\, 2024 \n\n\n\nThis course consists of 50 hours of didactic and 30 hours of clinical training including instruction on the following subjects: -Theoretical foundation of acupuncture\, with emphasis on current physiological concepts as they relate to traditional -Chinese medicine -Acupuncture anatomy and physiology -Acupuncture techniques\, including instruction in the use of needling techniques; moxibustion\, electroacupuncture and other noninvasive techniques for stimulating acupuncture points; precautions (e.g. sterilization of needles); contraindications and complications\, including adverse systemic effects -Application of acupuncture to the practice of dentistry \n\n\n\nKenneth E. SUMMARY:Harmony of Esthetics and Occlusion: Smile Analysis\, Bleaching\, Caries and Occlusion
DESCRIPTION:Presentation #1Smile Analysis and Esthetic Re-contouring\n\n\n\nSynopsis of PresentationPrior to initiating any esthetic treatment\, it is important for the dentist to examine and diagnosis the overall esthetic condition of the patient. Performing a smile analysis includes an evaluation of how the teeth are positioned in the face and their relationship to the lips\, as well as a tooth-by-tooth analysis.  Conservative treatments include re-contouring of the teeth\, bonding or esthetic periodontal treatments. Informing the patient of all treatment that is needed to maximize their smile potential prior to initiating bleaching will result in a more satisfied patient with more realistic expectations. \n\n\n\nObjectives: The participant will learn…1. Principles of Smile Analysis to address all patient needs2. Esthetic re-contouring principles for natural teeth and restorations3. Periodontal and orthodontic considerations for maximum esthetics \n\n\n\nPresentation #2Tooth Bleaching: What we now know about difficult discolorations!\n\n\n\nSynopsis of Presentation How current is your knowledge of bleaching products\, appropriate concentrations\, and technique variations?  What is the proper examination for any bleaching procedure? Which technique is safest\, cost-effective and efficacious? Explore tray bleaching\, in-office bleaching\, and OTC bleaching based on published research and clinical experience\, especially for children and older adults. Treatment for discolorations such as brown and white spots\, single dark teeth\, as well as nicotine stains and tetracycline-stained teeth will be discussed. \n\n\n\nObjectives: The participant will…a. Discover bleaching examination componentsb. Understand hydrogen and carbamide peroxide differencesc. Identify differences between tray\, in-office and OTC products and techniquesd. Discuss treatment options for brown & white discolorations\, plus nicotine stainse. Review treatment of tetracycline-stained teeth and long-term safetyf. Learn indications for different bleaching techniques and research support for each \n\n\n\nPresentation: #3New Caries Diagnosis techniques and Sealant placement\n\n\n\nSynopsis of Presentation:The diagnosis of caries has changed from the “explorer stick” to a visual scale due to the effects of fluoride on the hardness of enamel. Changes can result in under-diagnosis of caries\, and resultant spread of caries before early intervention. A review of the ICDAS classifications and the proper placements techniques for sealants and preventive resins will be presented. \n\n\n\nObjectives: 1.Learn current ICDAS classification of caries and rationale for the change2.Review indications and techniques for sealants\, including use of H2O23.Explore preventive resins with flowable composites and cleaning burs \n\n\n\nPresentation #4Occlusal Disease\, Splint Fabrication and Occlusal Adjustment Technique\n\n\n\nSynopsis of Presentation:Occlusal disease is one of the three main challenges to maintaining a healthy dentition\, in addition to caries and periodontal disease. Recognizing the signs of occlusal trauma on the teeth and restorations allows the dentist to minimize the effects and avoid restoration failures. Treatment can consist of an occlusal adjustment of the teeth\, or a bruxism splint to protect both the teeth and restorative care. \n\n\n\nObjectives:1.Identify signs of occlusal disease on teeth and restorations\, and determine appropriate treatment possibilities from a splint to an occlusal adjustment2.Determine a predictable simple method for mounting casts to fabricate a maxillary occlusal bruxism splint that is easy to fit and adjust.3.Learn the sequential technique for an occlusal adjustment to create a mutually- protected dental occlusion following basic guidelines.
