SUMMARY:Dental Acupuncture and Integrative Oral Medicine (Session 2 of 4)
DESCRIPTION:Patients are increasingly seeking out acupuncture as an adjunct to standard pain control measures. This is becoming more relevant in the setting of the current opiate epidemic\, as acupuncture provides a non-pharmacologic approach to reduce pain. This is also important in the realms of sleep medicine and orofacial pain where pharmacotherapy is riddled with a high side effect burden and risk of abuse. Despite the WHO having recommended acupuncture for treatments on headache\, facial pain\, neuralgia and insomnia\, few programs are available for dentists who wish to seek training. \n\n\n\nUCLA School of Dentistry is offering a unique\, evidence-based program to train dentists in the basics of dental acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory. By combining TCM principles with Western allopathic Medicine modalities\, participants will feel comfortable diagnosing and understanding the pathophysiology of both acute and chronic oral pain conditions from an integrative East-West perspective. Moreover\, participants will learn basic acupuncture treatments that can be safely delivered to patients. \n\n\n\n4 Session Course at UCLA February 2-4\, 2024 March 8-10\, 2024 April 19-21\, 2024 May 31- Jun 2\, 2024 \n\n\n\nThis course consists of 50 hours of didactic and 30 hours of clinical training including instruction on the following subjects: -Theoretical foundation of acupuncture\, with emphasis on current physiological concepts as they relate to traditional -Chinese medicine -Acupuncture anatomy and physiology -Acupuncture techniques\, including instruction in the use of needling techniques; moxibustion\, electroacupuncture and other noninvasive techniques for stimulating acupuncture points; precautions (e.g. sterilization of needles); contraindications and complications\, including adverse systemic effects -Application of acupuncture to the practice of dentistry \n\n\n\nKenneth E. SUMMARY:Understanding the TMJ and its Relationship to Occlusion and Airway: A Radiographic Exploration
DESCRIPTION:The aim of this course is to teach clinicians how to look for radiographic diagnostic clues that may indicate the presence of TMD or Sleep-disordered breathing in their dental patients. Taught by Dr. Dania Tamimi\, an Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist and author of a textbook on the subject\, “Specialty Imaging: Temporomandibular joint”\, the course will include a comprehensive review of TMJ and upper respiratory tract anatomy as visualized on CBCT and MRI volumes. She will review the growth and development of the TMJ and how dysfunction can change the morphology of the oral and maxillofacial complex\, including the airway\, and how to diagnose some of these dysfunctions using CBCT. The relationship of the TMJs and airway to the occlusion will be discussed in light of bite changes that may affect the final restorative and orthodontic outcome if undiagnosed. With the correct diagnosis of the patient comes higher likelihood of treatment outcome success. \n\n\n\nObjectives: \n\n\n\n\nTo review the MRI and CBCT imaging of the TMJ\n\n\n\nTo familiarize the participant with the normal anatomy of the major contributors to TMD and sleep-disordered breathing\n\n\n\nUnderstanding the correlation between TMD\, facial asymmetry\, occlusion and airway and how it presents radiographically

SUMMARY:Suturing Techniques and Principles
DESCRIPTION:Surgical procedures in dentistry are becoming much more commonplace\, where all dentists must be well-versed in basic and advanced suturing techniques. Whether performing a simple interrupted suture after draining a tooth abscess\, or releasing the periosteum to close a large incision after alveolar ridge augmentation\, many of the principles of tissue handling\, instrumentation\, and possible complications are the same. This course will review medical and local factors that can affect wound healing and review principles of suturing. Specific hands-on workshops will also be included to learn flap design\, basic and advanced suturing techniques\, focusing on tension-free closure\, and choosing appropriate suture materials. This course will make the participant more comfortable and confident in their suturing abilities\, allowing them to incorporate more surgical procedures into their daily practice. \n\n\n\nCourse Topics: \n\n\n\n\nReview wound healing and principles of suturing\n\n\n\nChoosing the best suture size and material\n\n\n\nInterrupted vs. continuous suturing; horizontal and vertical mattress suturing; figure-of-eight; sling suturing\, and others\n\n\n\nSuturing techniques for extraction sockets\, bone grafting\, implants\, soft tissue grafting

SUMMARY:HYBRID COURSE - Functional Consideration in Esthetic Dentistry
DESCRIPTION:Most modern dentists have developed vast knowledge in esthetics\, occlusion\, and restorative dentistry. However\, when presented with a complex case many clinicians have difficulty deciding where to start\, what materials to use\, and the proper sequence for treatment. With modern ceramic materials and implants\, the chance for catastrophic failure due to interference with function is greatly increased. Dr. McDonald will discuss proper positioning of the teeth utilizing functional-esthetic guidelines and outline a system for diagnosis and treatment sequencing of complex restorative cases through segmental restoration with modern materials. This approach is more technically achievable for the clinician and laboratory technician and certainly more feasible for the patient. \n\n\n\nObjectives: \n\n\n\n\nAppreciate the clinical steps for accurate occlusal records and development of essential diagnostic information. Understand how functional principles affect the size\, shape\, and position of our restorations.\n\n\n\nLearn current strategies for treatment staging and the importance of segmental restoration for clinical predictability and patient acceptance.

SUMMARY:HYBRID COURSE - Management and Utilization of the RDAEF
DESCRIPTION:There is strong evidence that allied dental personnel increase productivity of dental offices and clinics. In 2010\, via AB 2637\, California Registered Dental Assistants in Extended Functions (RDAEF) received additional restorative functions\, allowable under the direct supervision of a dentist. These functions include: \n\n\n\nConduct preliminary evaluation of the patient’s oral health\, including (but not limited to) charting\, intraoral and extra-oral evaluation of soft tissue\, classifying occlusion\, and myofunctional evaluation.Perform oral health assessments in school-based\, community health project settings under the direction of a dentist\, registered dental hygienist\, or registered dental hygienist in alternative practice. \n\n\n\n\nSize and fit endodontic master points and accessory points.\n\n\n\nCement endodontic master points and accessory points.\n\n\n\nTake final Impressions for tooth-borne removable prosthesis.\n\n\n\nPlace\, contour\, finish\, and adjust all direct restorations.\n\n\n\nPolish and contour existing amalgam restorations.\n\n\n\nAdjust and cement permanent indirect restorations.\n\n\n\nPerform cord retraction of gingiva for impression procedures.\n\n\n\nTake final impressions for permanent indirect restorations.\n\n\n\n\nOne viable alternative for increasing production and controlling office overhead while maintaining quality of care – is the utilization of the RDAEF2 in practice. There are currently only 1\,756 licensed RDAEFs in the entire state of California. There are 34\,619 licensed DDS in California. Each dentist can employ three (3) RDAEFs in practice. During the course\, you will hear from dentists who are utilizing RDAEFs in practice and they will share the impact the RDAEF has had on their practice. \n\n\n\nThe purpose of this course is to provide an in-depth knowledge of the Loma Linda University RDAEF program and details of the extensive training that the students receive. You will have an opportunity to see the quality of work that these students have produced. \n\n\n\nAt the end of the course\, dentists will be informed on how to evaluate the direct restorations placed by the RDAEFs in their practice. \n\n\n\nObjectives: \n\n\n\n\nUnderstand the California laws and regulations pertaining to the scope of duties and utilization of the RDAEF2 in practice\n\n\n\nGain an in-depth knowledge of the RDAEF curriculum\n\n\n\nLearn from other dentists how the RDAEF2 has improved their dental practices\n\n\n\nLearn how stress can be reduced and moral is raised by the utilization of the RDAEF2\n\n\n\nLearn how to incorporate the RDAEF2 into your practice\n\n\n\nSee images of the outstanding work performed by the RDAEF students\n\n\n\nBe calibrated to perform evaluations of restorations performed by the RDAEF2 in your practice
