The CDA Foundation’s board of directors plays an important role. The directors’ guidance leads ongoing efforts to support dental professionals, reduce barriers to care and improve Californians’ oral health. Today, get to know Gabriela Garces, a member of the board.
While many of the board’s members are dentists, improving oral health in the community requires the efforts of an entire community. Garces is a zone general manager at Henry Schein Dental – an industry partner that supports the Foundation’s efforts to provide care to underserved communities.
Along with her current leadership position at Henry Schein, Garces has been involved in the company’s efforts to diversify its workforce and empower women. She served as co-chair for the Henry Schein Women’s Leadership Network for many years and is a member of the Henry Schein Women’s Leadership Network Global Steering Committee. Her involvement with the Foundation began when she was nominated to be an external director by Henry Schein and CDA Foundation members.
Involvement takes many forms
Garces has jumped into her role on the Foundation with the same enthusiasm she approaches all areas of her life. “It makes such a difference to get involved in nonprofit and professional organizations that amplify efforts to provide dental and medical care to those who are underserved,” she says. “You can easily do this by participating in many events that the CDA Foundation organizes.” She also points to advocacy efforts like writing to policymakers and participating in campaigns as other examples of meaningful action.
“To engage peers and the public in providing and advocating for access to care in underserved communities, it’s essential to raise awareness through educational sessions, organizing local community events and social media,” Garces explains. She has enjoyed hosting fundraising events and encouraging in-kind donations to support health care programs and has worked collaboratively to build strong local community relationships to promote oral health literacy
Collaboration and focus on innovative solutions
When asked about her experience serving as a Foundation board member, Garces notes, “What I find most rewarding is witnessing the unwavering passion of our board members in serving and supporting dental communities across California. The rich diversity in thought and experience within our board fosters exceptional collaboration and a dedicated focus on innovative solutions.”
Garces added that her association with the Foundation has given her insights into nonprofit work and the impactful public policies and advocacy efforts championed by the Foundation. “CDA Foundation truly focuses on whole health, not just dental health. I am deeply grateful to be a part of this remarkable organization.”
