From Sacramento to China, Herbert Yee, DDS, recipient of the 2018 CDA Foundation Humanitarian Award, has served his community through dentistry, mentoring, leadership and philanthropy. Dr. Yee, a CDA member for seven decades, practiced dentistry in Sacramento for 54 years and inspired many students, including 20 family members spanning three generations, to become dentists.
Post-treatment care crucial in foreign object aspiration incidents

The accidental aspiration or ingestion of foreign objects during dental procedures can occur on occasion. After all, introducing dental instruments, restorative materials and other small dental components into the oral cavity while a patient is in a reclined position naturally creates an element of risk. While preventive measures may reduce the number of incidents, communication about proper post-treatment care can prevent them from developing into a critical event.
Loan repayment grant recipient’s life experiences define passion to serve

The CDA Foundation has named Andrea Ustarez, DDS, the recipient of its 2018 Student Loan Repayment Grant. Awarded annually to a recent dental school graduate, the grant assists with repayment of education loans in exchange for the recipient’s commitment to care for the underserved. Dr. Ustarez will receive up to $105,000 over three years to put toward repayment of her student loans while she realizes her goal of working in public health.

Smile, California: Helping Medi-Cal members use their dental benefit

A campaign to increase Medicaid-enrolled members’ use of Medi-Cal’s dental benefit was launched recently by the California Department of Health Care Services as part of an integrated plan to improve the overall performance of the state’s dental program. The “Smile, California” campaign will educate eligible members about the free and low-cost services available to maintain good oral health and make it easier for members to access care. Outreach efforts also focus on recruiting and maintaining providers.

State and local minimum wages will increase Jan. 1

Beginning Jan. 1, 2019, employers with 25 or fewer employees will pay California’s new minimum wage of $11 and employers with 26 or more employees will begin paying their employees $12. However, if the local minimum wage is higher than the state wage, employers of every size must pay the local minimum wage.
Clarification on new infection control requirement for dental pulp procedures

Dentists have contacted CDA Practice Support with questions about the new infection-control requirement that all licensed dentists in California should be following as of Jan. 1, 2019. As explained in a December Update article and according to the new law, when performing procedures on exposed dental pulp, water or other methods used for irrigation must be “sterile or contain recognized disinfecting or antibacterial properties.”
More changes for employment practices beginning in 2019

Four new laws make small but important clarifying changes to existing laws concerning salary history requests, Paid Family Leave expansion, lactation accommodation and defamation protection. But a fifth law significantly changes the requirements of mandatory sexual harassment training — including who must provide it and when and how it’s provided to employees.
Dental students can apply for up to $120K for loan repayment

Applications are being accepted through an extended deadline of Dec. 27, 2018, for the National Health Service Corps Students to Service Loan Repayment Program. Applications must be received by 7:30 p.m. EST. The NHSC S2S program provides up to $120,000 in tax-free loan repayment to dental and medical students in their final year of school in exchange for a three-year service commitment in a high-need (HPSA 14 or above) rural, tribal or urban community.
Organized dentistry protects colleagues suffering wildfire losses

California’s 2018 wildfires damaged and destroyed property and claimed lives in many areas throughout the state. The Nov. 8 Camp Fire in Paradise is the most destructive in state history, claiming at least 85 lives and burning nearly 19,000 structures. The fire chewed through 153,336 acres — homes, schools, churches and businesses, including nine dental practices and one clinic.

Strong year for TDSC with more dental supply savings to come in 2019

CDA members racked up $2 million in total savings on dental supplies in 2018 through tdsc.com, the shopping site for CDA’s newest subsidiary, The Dentists Supply Company. The $2 million savings milestone reached in September demonstrates the tremendous member interest in TDSC and doubled the $1 million savings milestone that members reached in May. On the heels of that savings milestone came two major announcements about plans for 2019.
