CDA objects to dental hygiene committee policy proposals in sunset review
The Dental Hygiene Committee of California is undergoing its 2017–18 “sunset review” — an evaluation by the Legislature to assess the DHCC’s performance and determine whether it should continue to exist and, if so, whether it should be modified. In a letter to Sen. Jerry Hill, CDA recognized the DHCC’s substantial work on its 2018 sunset review package before moving on to outline its objections to five policy recommendations.
CDA Foundation annual report highlights impact of key programs
The CDA Foundation has published its annual report highlighting the health, hope and happiness provided to individuals in 2017 through ongoing Foundation programs, including two student loan repayment grants, the Dental Materials and Supplies Grant and CDA Cares — the volunteer-run dental clinic held twice annually in communities throughout California.
CDA recognized by ADA for membership achievements
CDA's growth and diversity helped the association to receive six recruitment and retention awards from the American Dental Association at its Annual Conference on Membership in April. Silver diamine fluoride bill passes through first Senate committee hearing
CDA-sponsored legislation, Senate Bill 1148 (Pan, D-Sacramento), which if passed would allow dentists who provide care in the Medi-Cal dental program to be reimbursed when they use silver diamine fluoride for dental caries treatment, passed out of its first committee hearing — the Senate Health Committee — in April and was due to be heard by the Senate Appropriations Committee in late May.
Completion of 2017 Economic Census required
CDA has learned that the U.S. Census Bureau has contacted some dental practices asking that they complete the 2017 Economic Census. Any business that receives the letter is required by law to electronically provide the requested information according to the letter’s instructions. Failure to submit information may lead to a penalty of up to $5,000.

Understanding audit authority of third-party payers
An often overlooked but very important component of contracting with a dental benefit plan is the plan’s authority to audit charts or records. State regulators require dental benefit plans to have quality management, utilization and antifraud policies and procedures in place to protect the insured. Performing these post-pay chart audits or reviews is one way plans comply with this requirement. They conduct these reviews to ensure that dental procedures reported by a dental office on behalf of an enrollee are consistent within the provisions of the dental benefits.
Recent dental school graduates can receive up to $105K for loan repayment
Applications are being accepted as of May 1 for the CDA Foundation’s 2018 Student Loan Repayment Grant. Given annually since 2002, the grant program helps recent dental school graduates offset the financial burden of student loan debt while they pursue careers in public or community health. The award provides up to $35,000 per year and a maximum of $105,000 over three years to be applied toward repaying the dentists’ educational loan.
CDA Cares Anaheim clinic delivers dental care to 2,019 people
The CDA Foundation’s volunteer dental clinic, CDA Cares, provided $1,537,951 in charitable dental services to 2,019 people during the April 27-28 event at the Anaheim Convention Center. During the two-day event, dentists and dental professionals provided more than 11,858 procedures, including fillings, extractions, cleanings and oral health education.

CDA secures final court approval of $65M Delta Dental settlement for dentists

A San Francisco Superior Court judge has granted final approval of the $65 million amended settlement agreement between Delta Dental of California and the plaintiff class of Premier dentists. The comprehensive settlement is the result of a lengthy legal battle that CDA initiated in 2013 after learning of Delta Dental’s plans to reduce Premier provider rates by 8 to 12 percent. CDA brought the litigation in order to protect the rights of its members and to require Delta Dental to honor the terms of its contracts.
