Benefit plans have started offering information through their own online portals. When these portals were first introduced, the information offered was insufficient at best and in most cases still required an office to call the plan with many unanswered questions. However, this is less the case today as many plans have worked to improve their portal functionality to better meet the needs of the dental community.
Employers should implement new tax withholding tables for 2018

To comply with the 2017 Tax Bill signed into law in December by President Donald Trump, the IRS on Jan. 11 issued revised tax withholding tables for employee paychecks. “Employers should implement the 2018 withholding tables as soon as possible, but not later than Feb. 15, 2018” states the IRS in Notice 1036, which provides “early release copies” of the percentage method tables for income tax withholding.

The CDA Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2018 Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni Faculty Award. The Foundation presents the award annually to a faculty member affiliated with any of the six dental schools in California to acknowledge that individual’s exceptional leadership, innovation, collaboration, compassion, philanthropic spirit and integrity in dental education.
CDC app helps dental teams monitor infection prevention efforts

A free mobile app by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention can assist dental facilities in monitoring their compliance with recommended infection control practices. The CDC DentalCheck app automates an infection prevention checklist and allows dental health care providers to “easily move throughout the practice as they evaluate their compliance with recommended infection prevention practices.”
FDA bans active ingredients from nonprescription antiseptic products

In a final rule issued by the Food and Drug Administration, 24 active ingredients used in nonprescription antiseptic products are “not generally recognized as safe and effective” (GRAS/GRAE) for use by health care professionals in health care settings or situations “due to insufficient data.” The ban applies to use of these ingredients in over-the-counter antiseptics and takes effect Dec. 20, 2018.

Growth brings rewards for two dental student volunteers at CDA Cares

Between the two of them, Jesica Gonzalez and Walter Fuentes, both third-year dental students, have volunteered at 10 CDA Cares clinics. As the Bakersfield natives have progressed in school — Gonzalez at UCSF School of Dentistry and Fuentes at UCLA School of Dentistry — they and others have seen their capabilities evolve at the CDA Foundation’s biannual two-day clinic, which provides oral health care services at no charge to underserved communities.
Providers join forces to protect California’s health care system

CDA has joined a broad coalition of more than 100,000 California physicians, dentists, nurse practitioners, community clinics and pharmacists in a new effort to protect the gains California has made under the Affordable Care Act and improve California’s health care system. The Coalition to Protect Access to Care will actively oppose efforts in Washington to repeal and replace the ACA, which would strip health insurance from millions of Californians.
National Children’s Dental Health Month kicks off Feb. 1

Local dental societies this February can participate in National Children’s Dental Health Month by planning any number of activities, from offering dental health screenings and giving school presentations to organizing coloring or essay contests and sponsoring a display at the local library. Dentist, physician assistant, nurse practitioner and orthodontist take the top spots following this year’s highest-ranked profession — software developer. “A comfortable salary, low unemployment rate and agreeable work-life balance boost dentist to a top position on our list of Best Jobs,” states the U.S. News article.

Applications being accepted for ADA Foundation Dental Student Scholarships of $20K

Second-year dental students who meet eligibility requirements should apply by Friday, Feb. 2, 2018, for an ADA Foundation Dental Student Scholarship. The Foundation’s scholarship program recognizes dental students who are strong academically and who demonstrate outstanding promise in leadership, public service, volunteerism and/or research. The ADAF will award up to seven scholarships valued at $20,000 each.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2018, adults enrolled in the Denti-Cal program are eligible for an expanded set of dental benefits. The Department of Health Care Services on Nov. 9 issued a special provider bulletin to clarify the dental services that providers may render, bill and be reimbursed for by Denti-Cal in 2018, including scaling and root planing, partial dentures and posterior root canals.

Court grants preliminary approval of $65M Delta Dental settlement agreement

In a hearing on Dec. 27, a San Francisco Superior Court judge granted preliminary approval of the amended settlement agreement between Delta Dental of California and the plaintiff class of Premier dentists. After an error in the financial calculations was discovered during the validation CDA required of the prior settlement amounts, the new settlement includes an agreement by Delta Dental to pay an unprecedented monetary award of more than $65 million and expands the number of dentists eligible for awards to more than 14,000.
