New CDA president begins term

Natasha Lee, DDS, is CDA’s new president for 2018. Lee, a practicing general dentist in the Sunset District of San Francisco, is a graduate of the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry class of 2000. With more than 17 years of experience as a dental educator, Lee spent over a decade teaching preclinical restorative techniques and is now an assistant professor and course director of Practice Management and Jurisprudence at Pacific Dugoni.
Updates to 2017-18 Required Poster Set

Regulatory changes have occurred since the printing of the 2017-18 CDA Required Poster Set. As of December 2017 the three changes are: an updated Wage Order 4-2001 to reflect increases in the state minimum wage; a “Transgender Rights in the Workplace” poster that must be posted beginning Jan. 1, 2018; and an updated “Safety and Health Protection on the Job” notice.
Practical examination no longer a requirement for RDA licensure

After years of low pass rates on the RDA practical examination, a professional analysis that raised questions of exam validity and reliability, and a temporary exam suspension, the Dental Board of California decided to permanently eliminate the practical examination as a requirement for RDA licensure.
Current registrations and safety certificates required of X-ray machine owners, operators

With the recent increase in X-ray machine registration fees, CDA reminds members to ensure their registrations are up to date. CDA Regulatory Compliance Analyst Teresa Pichay cites recent calls from dentists who were surprised to receive past-due bills for registration fees dating as far back as eight years, and she cautions dentists that “not receiving a bill does not exempt a facility with X-ray equipment from paying the registration fees.”
CDA negotiates larger settlement for Delta Dental Premier dentists

A revised proposed settlement agreement between Delta Dental of California and the plaintiff class of Premier dentists has been filed in Superior Court. The revised settlement includes an agreement by Delta Dental to pay an unprecedented monetary award that nearly doubles the amount the parties had previously agreed upon to more than $65 million.
Stockton-based dentist with ‘huge heart for the underserved’ receives humanitarian award

Not even an oral cancer diagnosis in 2012 could slow down Lester Low, DDS, recipient of the 2017 CDA Foundation Humanitarian Award. Early diagnosis and treatment helped Dr. Low beat squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue, but throughout his treatment he continued to volunteer his time and services for several organizations in the San Joaquin Valley, a few with which Low has been volunteering for more than 20 years.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2018, the hourly minimum wage for employers with 25 or fewer employees will increase to $10.50 per hour. For employers with 26 or more employees, the minimum wage will increase to $11 per hour. Employers with exempt employees should evaluate employee salaries, as exempt employees in California generally must earn a minimum monthly salary of no less than two times the state minimum wage for full-time employment.

CDA, The Dentists Insurance Company, The Dentists Service Company and the CDA Foundation will close at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, 2017, and remain closed through New Year’s Day. The offices will reopen Tuesday, Jan. 2. To offset this closure, CDA and its subsidiary companies were open for business on certain holidays throughout the year.
Stakes high for California without renewed CHIP funding

Despite broad bipartisan support, Congress neglected to take action to extend Children’s Health Insurance (CHIP) funding before it expired Sept. 30. The consequences of Congress’ delay are creating stressful uncertainty for states and families across the country. Sixteen states, including California, will run out of funding for the CHIP program by the end of January. CDA is calling on its members to help protect coverage for children and hard-fought improvements in the Denti-Cal program.
Winner of 2017 Dugoni faculty award will use funds to engage students

Richard Fredekind, DMD, MA, executive associate dean at Pacific Dugoni School of Dentistry, has received the 2017 Arthur A. Dugoni Faculty Award in acknowledgment of his exceptional leadership, innovation, collaboration, compassion, philanthropic spirit and integrity in dental education. “This award will help me, and us, continue teaching students effectively,” says Fredekind, who hopes to apply the funds toward the purchase of technology.

Supplemental reimbursements receive federal approval

Significant rate increases for hundreds of procedures covered by Denti-Cal have been approved by the federal government. The supplemental payments of 40 percent are the result of CDA-sponsored Proposition 56 and the unprecedented investment of $140 million in the Denti-Cal program, which will be matched with federal dollars for a potential total of $350 million for fiscal year 2017-18.
