TDIC alerts CDA members about copyright infringement risk

The Dentists Insurance Company has received and is currently working to resolve several claims against its policyholders related to the unauthorized use of proprietary software code on the policyholders’ dental practice websites. The claimant asserts the policyholders have committed copyright infringement by using, without permission, copyright-protected software that provides real-time online chat capability.
Updated amalgam separator Q&A addresses tenant-landlord responsibility

Dentists who share a building with other dental practices are contacting CDA Practice Support to inquire about their obligations under the Environmental Protection Agency’s amalgam separator requirement, which took effect July 14, 2017. The amalgam separator is designed to remove mercury and other metals entering the waste stream from dental practices.
Informed consent: More than just a form

Have you ever had one of those moments when you received a decision from a dental benefit plan and thought, “There ought to be a law?” Well, there isn’t a law, in many cases. All health plans must meet requirements as determined by the state agencies that regulate, license and certify them. However, the issues that matter most to providers as well as patients — what is included in the plan’s scope of benefits, for example — are not governed by state laws or regulations.
Dental students can receive up to $120K in tax-free loan repayment

The application cycle for the National Health Service Corps’ 2018 Students to Service Loan Repayment Program is now open. The S2S LRP provides up to $120,000 in tax-free loan repayment to dental and medical students in their final year of school, allowing them to pursue their passion for delivering care while working in rural, tribal and high-need communities throughout the nation.
Employers must use newest Form I-9 beginning Sept. 18

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services on July 17 released a new Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. Practice owners who are hiring or planning to hire employees soon may continue to use the current version of the Form I-9 or may choose to use the new version of the form through Sept. 16, but must begin using the updated Form I-9 beginning Monday, Sept. 18.

$30M annual boost to state oral health program

Five years after CDA developed a proposal to reduce barriers to dental care in California, several of the proposal’s objectives have come to pass. Most notably was the 2015 installation of Jayanth Kumar, DDS, MPH, as state dental director. And now, thanks in part to the passage of Proposition 56, the state oral health plan that CDA and other stakeholders helped develop over the past year will receive a significant financial boost of $30 million annually.
