CDA Cares will be held April 22-23 in San Mateo.

The 2017-18 state budget proposed by Gov. Jerry Brown calls for using tobacco tax-generated funds from Proposition 56 to offset the state’s current obligations to Medi-Cal rather than provide additional funding for provider reimbursement rates. This proposal disregards the will of the voters and the ballot measure’s provisions.

Google update pulls reviews from across web

Dentists should take note of a Google update launched in mid-September that pulls business reviews from other websites and displays those reviews in the “knowledge panel” — a box of information that appears on the right side of Google search results.

And cybercriminals are more frequently targeting small businesses and organizations, which were once considered a lesser target. Now, cybercriminals exploit small businesses to gain access to bigger businesses through the distribution chain or payment portals.
San Jose begins community water fluoridation

After years of advocating for community water fluoridation in the largest U.S. city without it, San Jose residents have finally begun receiving the benefits of fluoride. In December, the Santa Clara Valley Water District began fluoridating its water supply serving eastern portions of Santa Clara County.
All 2016 HIPAA breaches must be reported to HHS

HIPAA-covered entities that experienced a breach of protected health information in 2016 are required to notify the secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, regardless of the size of the breach. An entity’s reporting obligations will depend on whether the breach incident affected fewer than 500 individuals or 500 or more individuals.
Supreme Court issues decision on employee rest periods

The California Supreme Court on Dec. 22 issued an important decision in a case (Augustus v. ABM) involving the security guard industry. In its simplest form, the ruling stated that “… state law prohibits on-duty and on-call rest periods. During required rest periods, employers must relieve their employees of all duties and relinquish any control over how employees spend their break time.”
FDA bans use of powdered gloves in health care

Dentists, physicians and other health care professionals will no longer be allowed to use powdered gloves when treating patients, per a rule finalized Dec. 16 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The rule was first proposed in March 2016 and takes effect Jan. 18.
