Effective July 1, a new law requires dental plans to comply with uniform standards and provide timely updates — including changes in practice address, license number, etc. — to their provider directories. The intent of the new law, SB 137, is to provide patients with more accurate and complete information regarding providers participating in the plan’s provider network.
HIPAA audits to expand in 2017

In May, several thousand HIPAA-covered entities received emails from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Civil Rights (OCR) as the agency rolled out Phase 2 of its HIPAA Audit Program. One email asked covered entities to confirm contact information, then, if information was confirmed, covered entities received a questionnaire and were given 30 days to complete it.
Dental plans moving to direct deposit claim payments

The dental plan industry reports that more than 70 percent of dental claims received by plans are sent electronically. In California, that number is closer to 75 percent. Practice management software, and the standardization of forms for electronic transactions, have made this possible.

First USC dental student completes licensure by portfolio

The first dental student at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC has completed the licensure by portfolio process. Alexandra Chamberlain, DDS, completed the school's Certification of Clinical Experiences for licensure through portfolio by passing seven clinical competency examinations.

CDA-supported bill protects practices in disability lawsuits

Recently passed legislation provides some extra protection for small businesses against claims of disabled access violations. Effective May 10, 2016, SB 269 allows small businesses a 15-day period to correct certain technical violations of disabled access design requirements.
Former Student Loan Repayment Grant recipient pays it forward

Every year, the CDA Foundation awards one new dentist with a Student Loan Repayment Grant to help repay his or her dental education loan. To date, the grant program has not only provided financial support for 16 dentists across the state, it has motivated them to give back to their communities, and Stephanie Calvillo, DDS, the 2013 Student Loan Repayment Grant recipient, is a good example of that.

New overtime rules to take effect

The U.S. Department of Labor released new Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) rules that require employers to pay overtime to exempt employees who earn salaries less than $47,476 per year, beginning Dec. 1, 2016.
TDIC signs purchase agreement for Moda-held companies

TDIC has announced the signing of a definitive agreement to purchase three Moda-held companies — Dentists Benefits Insurance Company (DBIC), Dentists Benefits Corporation (DBC) and Northwest Dentists Insurance Company (NORDIC). The definitive agreement follows TDIC’s recent announcement of the intent to purchase the companies that provide and administer insurance products and services to more than 4,500 policyholders in seven states.
