Dental students at the UCSF School of Dentistry are now teaching medical students about oral health. This interprofessional activity is aimed at aligning the curriculum with the national guidelines set by the Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration to expand the oral health clinical competency of primary care clinicians.

The number of English- and Spanish-speaking parents who say their children brush for two minutes, twice a day has increased since the launch of the Kids’ Healthy Mouths campaign in 2012. According to a recent report from the Ad Council and the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives, there has been a 13 percent increase — from 48 percent in 2012 to 61 percent in 2015.

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research has awarded more than $2 million in first-year funding to seven research grants centered on studying the effects of electronic cigarettes on oral and craniofacial tissues. The timing of the awards is critical as research shows an increasing number of high school students, approximately 13.4 percent, are now using e-cigarettes.

Legislative deal prevents loss of dental funding

The state Legislature and governor recently agreed to a deal, supported by CDA, that will preserve $1.3 billion in federal funding for Medi-Cal. The agreement reforms the state’s managed care organization (MCO) tax to comply with federal requirements that the tax apply to all managed care health plans, not just those that serve Medi-Cal patients, in order to preserve the federal matching money the tax brings to the state.

Deadline for Medicare registration extended

CDA Cares to help struggling populations in Ventura

CDA praises historic votes to strengthen tobacco laws

A dentist's role in reporting child, elder abuse

Abuse represents a spectrum of behavior. It is repetitive in nature and fatal abuse is often preceded by minor manifestations of maltreatment, which could be overlooked by dentists and their staff. Under California law, each person licensed by the Dental Board of California and Dental Hygiene Committee of California is a “mandated reporter” for known or suspected abuse or neglect of a child, elder or dependent adult and incidents of violence.
