I am writing to share positive news about CDA's legal action against Delta Dental. A superior court judge has issued a preliminary ruling in favor of CDA regarding our association's standing to represent members in the case.
Practices must display two new posters

Dentists need to be aware that there are two new posters that must be printed and posted in their dental offices. The orange and gray set of required posters, which are printed by CDA and provided by local component dental societies, was published and distributed to members in May 2015. However, for 2016, there have been updates that need to be incorporated into the existing poster sets until new poster sets are available in the spring of 2017.
Dentists claim three top job rankings of 2016

After claiming the top spot in the nation's job rankings last year, dentists now hold three of the top spots of 2016, according to U.S. News & World Report. It ranks orthodontist and dentist No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in its 100 Best Jobs of 2016. Oral and maxillofacial surgeon ties with obstetrician and gynecologist at No. 10.

Significant investment in state dental program

At the end of 2015, the state of California and the federal government reached an unprecedented agreement that will make an additional $740 million investment in California’s Denti-Cal program over the next five years. California has often made changes to its contract with the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), which governs the operation of the Medicaid program (Medi-Cal in California), with the goal to increase flexibility and funding for the medical services covered by the program.

Ventura County is like most areas in California's coastal valleys - it has a significant agriculture population with many receiving health care through Medicaid and Denti-Cal. Mark Lisagor, DDS, practiced in Camarillo and Oxnard for many years and saw the need firsthand. But due to the low reimbursement rates and bureaucratic challenges of the Denti-Cal program, there aren't enough providers in the area to handle the need and many of those who are in pain end up in the emergency room.

CAMBRA treatment model expanding internationally

CURES 2.0 enrollment now open to dentists

All dentists who are authorized to prescribe, order, administer, furnish or dispense controlled substances must register in the Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System (CURES) by July 1 and have updated browsers to access the system. Dispensed controlled substance prescriptions are recorded in CURES, which allows prescribers to look up a patient's controlled substance current usage and past history.
New online licensure renewal system goes live Jan. 19

The scheduled "go-live" date for the new online license renewal system known as BreEZe is Jan. 19. The BreEZe system (breeze.ca.gov) allows dental professionals to apply for or renew their licenses online, pay with a credit card, track the status of an application or licensing request, submit address changes and obtain proof of license status. BreEZe also enables consumers to verify a professional license and file consumer complaints.

If a child is playing a sport and gets hit in the mouth with a ball causing a fractured tooth, the current treatment for regenerative endodontics is apexification. Kenneth Hargreaves, DDS, PhD, chair of Endodontics at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, says the success rate of this procedure for immature teeth is around 77 percent, but that there is an increasingly popular procedure that creates nearly a 100 percent success rate at saving the tooth.

New CDA Foundation chair dedicated to serving the public

Jean Creasey, DDS, didn't always plan to be a dentist, even long into her adult years. She enjoyed working as a dental hygienist at her husband's practice in Nevada City throughout the 80s and 90s. But she began to notice an alarming trend while volunteering at local school programs in remote areas of Nevada County: a rampant rate of caries in children due to an unmet need. It was then that she decided she wanted to make more of an impact on the lives of children like these and went back to school to become a dentist.
Save Lives gathers signatures, raises funds

CDA and the Save Lives California coalition have launched the signature-gathering phase of a ballot measure campaign to increase the state's tax on tobacco products by $2 per pack. The coalition will have until April 26 to collect the required amount of signatures to qualify the "California Healthcare, Research and Prevention Tobacco Act of 2016" for the November ballot and the campaign has a comprehensive program to ensure enough signatures are collected. CDA will be reaching out to components and grassroots leaders to provide members with an opportunity to sign the petitions to help qualify the measure.
