CDA introduces new online learning platform, CDA Brightbox

Dental professionals now have an easier way to obtain continuing education credits through CDA’s innovative new online learning platform. CDA Brightbox lets users access all CDA online learning courses, including the audio recordings from CDA Presents, in one place. The platform also offers audio recordings from CDA’s biannual C.E. convention, CDA Presents. As part of this new member benefit, CDA members can save 50% on online learning courses.

The Spot Educational Theaters at CDA Presents The Art and Science of Dentistry in Anaheim will offer free one-hour lectures by industry experts during exhibit-hall hours all three days of the convention. With two locations of The Spot, attendees can attend up to 35 free lectures covering topics ranging from ethics to informed consent and from student loan refinancing to chronic wound therapy. Many lectures offer one unit of C.E. credit.
Deadline ahead to provide new sexual harassment prevention training to employees

A state law that took effect early this year requires that employers with five or more employees provide qualified sexual harassment prevention training no later than Jan. 1, 2020. Practice owners can achieve this new training requirement by registering their dental teams for one or two courses offered this May at CDA Presents in Anaheim.

CDA Presents attendees can access their C.E. certificates soon

CDA Presents The Art and Science of Dentistry concluded Sept. 8 in San Francisco. About three weeks after the convention, all who completed C.E. courses can expect to receive an email notification that C.E. certificates are available and can log in to access them using their CDA user ID and password. Attendees who do not have a CDA user ID and password will simply need to sign up as a new user and may want to get a head start by signing up now.

Poor documentation, failure to immediately disclose to a patient that an unexpected treatment outcome occurred and failure to immediately refer the patient to a specialist were common trends noted in a five-year analysis by The Dentists Insurance Company. The results of this analysis formed the basis for a new TDIC seminar “Pain and Perception: Reducing Nerve Injury Risks,” which launches in September at CDA Presents The Art and Science of Dentistry in San Francisco.

Scientist Victor DeNoble to talk about tobacco industry's suppression of addiction research

While working as a postdoctoral fellow doing addiction research in 1980, a young scientist was recruited by the research arm of tobacco company Philip Morris USA to build a secret lab and develop a cigarette that would eliminate or reduce cardiovascular risk in smokers. Reportedly, the scientists at Philip Morris had invented the molecules but had no way to test them. This is where the new recruit, Victor DeNoble, PhD, came in.

Workgroup monitors ACA reform efforts for CDA members

CDA has assembled a group of volunteer dentists to monitor the impact of federal ACA reform efforts on behalf of CDA members. Since December 2016, this workgroup has been gathering information and meeting regularly with policymakers to assess the potential impact on California dentists of all federal proposals to repeal, amend or replace the ACA. If a child is playing a sport and gets hit in the mouth with a ball causing a fractured tooth, the current treatment for regenerative endodontics is apexification. Kenneth Hargreaves, DDS, PhD, chair of Endodontics at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, says the success rate of this procedure for immature teeth is around 77 percent, but that there is an increasingly popular procedure that creates nearly a 100 percent success rate at saving the tooth.

First dental students complete licensure by portfolio

The first two dental students in the country have now completed the licensure by portfolio process. The University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry students, Daniel Feldman and Dan Beroukhim, accomplished this by building a portfolio of completed clinical experiences and clinical competency examinations in six subject areas over the normal course of their clinical training. Calibrated UOP faculty evaluated the examinations.

Dental board conducting C.E. audits for license renewal

The Dental Board of California is currently in the process of auditing random dental practices to ensure that licensees are meeting the continuing education (C.E.) requirements necessary for license renewal. Over the last year, the dental board has been auditing approximately 60 dentists per month. Two issues identified during these audits are that licensees are unable to produce the appropriate certificate of completion for C.E. courses, and licensees are taking classes that are not dental-related.

Dental benefits education pays off for practices

In March 2014, CDA piloted the Dental Benefits Workshop, a two-day program for dentists that provided the necessary tools and insight into the challenging world of dental benefit plans. In attendance were 40 dentists who were hand-selected to participate in the pilot program based on several criteria, including number of years in practice, current participation level with dental benefit plans, practice demographics, etc. A six-month post-workshop survey of the March 2014 workshop attendees showed decreased claim denials and improved patient communication, among other things.

The Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry’s new 395,000-square-foot building in San Francisco held its first classes on July 14. The seven-story building (155 Fifth Street) underwent two years of renovation to be turned into the campus that now houses all academic programs and dental clinics.
CDA helps new dentists launch their careers

To help new dentists start their careers off on the right path, CDA hosted a New Dentist Career Launch at its headquarters. The three-day program held from July 9-11 provided new dentists extensive and intense training intended to increase their understanding of the nuances of a career in dentistry and guide them toward achieving professional success. The 50 new dentists in attendance learned about topics such as reducing student loan debt, contract and lease negotiation strategies for practice start-up or acquisition and understanding their credit and personal financial resume.

With the passing of Major League Baseball great Tony Gwynn from mouth cancer, CDA reminds dentists that there are many resources available to help their patients stop using tobacco and smokeless tobacco products. Though Gwynn's mouth cancer was never medically linked to the use of smokeless tobacco, he believed it was related to his cancer diagnosis. Experience shows that an oral cancer lesion, which often grows slowly and may be painless, can easily be overlooked by a patient who has "had this spot forever."
