CDA Cares draws support from new presenting sponsor

The CDA Foundation is gearing up for its 16th CDA Cares volunteer dental event with new and continued support from community members and key sponsors. The clinic will take place Sept. 27-28 at the National Orange Show Events Center in San Bernardino, Calif. About 1,950 people are expected to receive oral health care services at no cost, thanks to the support of generous sponsors including Delta Dental, Western Dental, Henry Schein, Planmeca, GES, The Dentists Insurance Company and The Dentists Supply Company.

'Life-changing' grants awarded to 38 dentists committed to Medi-Cal

Marc Bernardo, DMD, MPH, and Michelle Galeon, DMD, are among the first recipients of a new grant funded by Proposition 56, a voter-approved tobacco tax that CDA and other health care organizations sponsored in 2016. The grant program awarded $10 million in debt relief to 38 dentists (up to $300,000 each) in exchange for the dentists maintaining a 30% or more Medi-Cal patient caseload for five years.
CDA Foundation accepting donations for annual silent auction

The CDA Foundation is seeking donations for this year’s annual silent auction at the CDA House of Delegates. Hosted annually in November, the auction gives members a chance to bid on and win great prizes and trips while helping the Foundation make a difference in the lives of others. Donated items can include wine, jewelry, artwork (paintings, pottery, glassware), timeshares, sporting event tickets, gift cards and more. The deadline for receipt of donated items is Sept. 1.
Former CDA Cares patient now regularly volunteers at clinics - with a big smile

Catherine’s dental phobia was once so severe that dental advertisements or even passing a dental office could trigger a panic attack. Worse, her debilitating phobia kept her from seeing a dentist for over 10 years. Eventually, she developed a life-threatening oral infection and lived with it for over a year and a half. “I was in pain, but I was too scared to receive care,” said Catherine, a resident of Bakersfield, Calif.
Foundation grant recipients: Where are they now?

In 2010, Vanessa Franks, DDS, became the 11th recipient of the CDA Foundation’s Student Loan Repayment Grant — a flagship program that aims to offset some of the financial burden of student loan debt in exchange for a three-year commitment by recipients to care for the underserved. Describing herself as “a natural caretaker with a strong inherent motivation to enrich the lives of others,” Dr. Franks said a career in public health had been a longtime goal.

Foundation accepting applications for Student Loan Repayment Grant

Recent dental school graduates and students who will soon graduate from dental school can apply now through July 31 for the CDA Foundation’s 2019 Student Loan Repayment Grant. Awarded annually, the grant provides up to $35,000 per year for a maximum of $105,000 in exchange for the recipient’s three-year commitment to care for the underserved. The application period closes at 11: 59 p.m., Wednesday, July 31.

CDA Cares Solano provides nearly $1.3 million in oral health care

The CDA Foundation’s volunteer dental clinic, CDA Cares, provided nearly $1.3 million in charitable dental services to 1,491 people at the Solano County Fairgrounds March 8-9. During the two-day event, dentists and dental professionals performed 8,955 procedures, including fillings, extractions and cleanings. Additionally, the clinic provided patients with oral health education.

In just over a month, CDA Cares volunteers will deliver no-cost dental services to an estimated 1,950 individuals who experience barriers to care. Over two days, March 8-9, at the Solano County Fairgrounds in Vallejo, Calif., dentists, hygienists, lab technicians, dental assistants and other professionals will volunteer their services and time, providing cleanings, extractions, root canals, dentures, triage and oral health education. The Foundation still seeks volunteers in all clinical areas, especially oral surgeons, lab techs and nurses and physicians for medical triage.
Give Kids a Smile 2019 kicks off Feb. 1

Local dental societies are teaming up with the ADA once again for the annual Give Kids a Smile program, a volunteer initiative to provide dental screenings, treatment and education at no charge to underserved children. Give Kids a Smile kicks off the first Friday in February to coincide with National Children’s Dental Health Month. This year, the date is Feb. 1; however, GKAS programs can take place throughout the year.
Foundation accepting applications for 2019 Dugoni Faculty Award

The application deadline for the 2019 Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni Faculty Award has been extended to Tuesday, April 30. Each year, the CDA Foundation accepts applications for the Dugoni Faculty Award, named for Arthur A. Dugoni, DDS, MSD, and his vast accomplishments in dental education and organized dentistry. Applicants must hold a full- or part-time teaching position and be connected with a dental program associated with a California dental school.
Forensic odontologists help identify victims of disaster, crime

As the smoke cleared from the Northern California wildfire that destroyed more than 153,000 acres, 18,804 structures and most of the town of Paradise last November, four CDA members worked night and day at the Sacramento morgue to help identify the remains of victims who died in that fire. Led by California Assemblymember Jim Wood, DDS, the team of forensic odontologists, including Drs. George Gould, Roland Chew, Mark Porco and Duane Spencer, examined teeth, tooth roots, metal crowns and porcelain fillings.

Preliminary criteria for the Prop. 56 Dental Loan Repayment Program were recently announced by the California Department of Health Care Services. The program will repay up to $300,000 toward student loans for dentists who commit to serving Denti-Cal beneficiaries. Applications will open this spring with participants selected no later than July 1.
CDA Foundation honors humanitarian for lifetime of service

From Sacramento to China, Herbert Yee, DDS, recipient of the 2018 CDA Foundation Humanitarian Award, has served his community through dentistry, mentoring, leadership and philanthropy. Dr. Yee, a CDA member for seven decades, practiced dentistry in Sacramento for 54 years and inspired many students, including 20 family members spanning three generations, to become dentists.

The CDA Foundation has named Andrea Ustarez, DDS, the recipient of its 2018 Student Loan Repayment Grant. Awarded annually to a recent dental school graduate, the grant assists with repayment of education loans in exchange for the recipient’s commitment to care for the underserved. Dr. Ustarez will receive up to $105,000 over three years to put toward repayment of her student loans while she realizes her goal of working in public health.
Dental students can apply for up to $120K for loan repayment

Applications are being accepted through an extended deadline of Dec. 27, 2018, for the National Health Service Corps Students to Service Loan Repayment Program. Applications must be received by 7:30 p.m. EST. The NHSC S2S program provides up to $120,000 in tax-free loan repayment to dental and medical students in their final year of school in exchange for a three-year service commitment in a high-need (HPSA 14 or above) rural, tribal or urban community.
Organized dentistry protects colleagues suffering wildfire losses

California’s 2018 wildfires damaged and destroyed property and claimed lives in many areas throughout the state. The Nov. 8 Camp Fire in Paradise is the most destructive in state history, claiming at least 85 lives and burning nearly 19,000 structures. The fire chewed through 153,336 acres — homes, schools, churches and businesses, including nine dental practices and one clinic.

Financial assistance available to dentists impacted by California wildfires

The CDA Foundation is accepting applications for the Disaster Relief Grant. The grant assists dentists, dental staff and component staff members with immediate and emergency needs as a direct result of the Camp Fire in Northern California’s Butte County and the Woolsey and Hill fires affecting Ventura and Los Angeles counties. The one-time, single-installment grant provides financial assistance of up to $5,000. Applicants who have lost a home may request additional funds for dependent, immediate family members.
CDA Cares Modesto delivers dental care to 1,533 people

The CDA Foundation has wrapped up another successful CDA Cares in Modesto. The volunteer clinic provided more than $1.6 million in care to 1,533 people during the Oct. 27-28 event at the Modesto Centre Plaza — the same location as the very first CDA Cares event held in 2012. Nearly 1,800 volunteers donated their time and skills, including hundreds of dentists and dental health professionals who provided fillings, cleanings, extractions, limited dentures and more.

The next DEA National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is set for Saturday, Oct. 27, and more than 300 locations in California are prepared to help people dispose of unused prescription drugs safely and anonymously. Health care providers can encourage their patients and others to dispose of prescription drugs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Patients should also be made aware that they can also dispose of unused prescription drugs year-round at designated locations.

Aisha Amin, DMD, was just beginning her career in community health when she received the CDA Foundation’s 2014 Student Loan Repayment Grant. The 2013 graduate of A.T. Still University, School of Health Management started practicing at Family HealthCare Network in the town of Woodlake in Tulare County and transferred in fall 2014 to the Visalia FHCN clinic, where she remains today. Over the last several years she has advanced from a general dentist to the assistant dental director and is now the network’s dental director.

Given annually since 2002, the grant program helps recent dental school graduates offset the financial burden of student loan debt while they pursue careers in public or community health. The award provides up to $35,000 per year and a maximum of $105,000 over three years to be applied toward repaying the dentists’ educational loan.

Stockton-based dentist with ‘huge heart for the underserved’ receives humanitarian award

Not even an oral cancer diagnosis in 2012 could slow down Lester Low, DDS, recipient of the 2017 CDA Foundation Humanitarian Award. Early diagnosis and treatment helped Dr. Low beat squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue, but throughout his treatment he continued to volunteer his time and services for several organizations in the San Joaquin Valley, a few with which Low has been volunteering for more than 20 years.

Dr. Ramirez, recipient of the CDA Foundation’s 2017 Student Loan Repayment Grant, grew up with two siblings and a disabled mother whose income was more than 500 percent below the poverty level. But he says he now embraces this adversity.
CDA supports dental communities in natural disasters

In response to recent natural disasters in California, Texas, Florida and the Caribbean, CDA has provided financial donations to help dental professionals with relief efforts. CDA donated $10,000 to assist the Colegio de Cirujanos Dentistas de Puerto Rico with disaster relief in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria that struck the U.S. territory in late September. Additionally, CDA and TDIC made donations to dental associations to assist with relief efforts, including $40,000 to the Texas Dental Association in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.

CVS Health expands fight against opioid abuse

CVS Health launched a new initiative in September to help fight the national opioid abuse epidemic by enhancing opioid utilization management, providing drug disposal kiosks nationwide and aiding local communities in treatment and recovery services. The president and CEO of CVS Health said in a news release that addressing the nation’s opioid crisis calls for a multipronged effort involving many health care stakeholders, including dentists.

$30M annual boost to state oral health program

Five years after CDA developed a proposal to reduce barriers to dental care in California, several of the proposal’s objectives have come to pass. Most notably was the 2015 installation of Jayanth Kumar, DDS, MPH, as state dental director. And now, thanks in part to the passage of Proposition 56, the state oral health plan that CDA and other stakeholders helped develop over the past year will receive a significant financial boost of $30 million annually.

Volunteers, community changed by CDA Cares San Mateo

Jean Creasey, DDS, didn't always plan to be a dentist, even long into her adult years. She enjoyed working as a dental hygienist at her husband's practice in Nevada City throughout the 80s and 90s. But she began to notice an alarming trend while volunteering at local school programs in remote areas of Nevada County: a rampant rate of caries in children due to an unmet need. Santos Cortez, DDS, was born in Tulare, Calif., a Central Valley town where his parents were farmworkers who came to the U.S. on a government program. Cortez and his parents lived on the farm where they picked fruit and vegetables. Cortez, who is now a pediatric dentist in Long Beach, recently returned to the Central Valley as a volunteer for CDA Cares Fresno. He couldn’t help but wonder whether he would have sat in the dental chair if CDA Cares had been available when he was a child.

Volunteer registration open for CDA Cares Fresno

CDA Cares Fresno will be held on Oct. 2-3 at the Fresno Convention Center. Volunteers will help provide oral health care services at no charge to a large number of expected patients who will receive fillings, extractions, cleanings, oral health education and assistance in finding a dentist for follow-up care. Dentists and dental professionals are needed in areas throughout the clinic, including restorative, numbing, pediatric, triage and routing.
Dentists help man get smile back in time for wedding

Josh is engaged to be married this August. His fiancée Rachel was one of the main reasons he decided to take action to get his oral health under control. He got his teeth fixed thanks to the generosity of the dentists who treated him before CDA Cares by removing most of the decay as well as at the CDA Cares Sacramento clinic in March, where root canals were provided.
Revised optimal fluoride level in drinking water released

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has determined 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water is the optimal fluoride level in drinking water to prevent tooth decay. This recommendation, released April 27, updates and replaces the previous recommended range (0.7 to 1.2 milligrams per liter) issued in 1962. CDA applauds this decision by HHS.

Governor's budget proposal ignores Denti-Cal

CDA is disappointed that the 2015-16 state budget proposal released by Gov. Jerry Brown Friday does not address the statewide crisis in access to dental care. The budget proposal does not address any of the critical issues highlighted by a recent state audit of the Denti-Cal program, which found that the Denti-Cal program is failing to provide adequate access to timely care for millions of low-income children.

The sixth annual CDA “Ken Sanford Memorial Motorcycle Ride” at Sequoia National Park raised more than $10,000 for the CDA Foundation — a record amount for this event. The California Dental Association Foundation’s two-day dental clinic, CDA Cares, provided $1.66 million in charitable dental services to 1,861 people during the Nov. 21-22 event in Pomona. During the two-day charity event, dentists and dental professionals provided fillings, extractions, cleanings and oral health education. Additionally, volunteer technicians in the dental lab area worked to provide 345 full and partial dentures and repairs.

Through the Legacy Giving Program, dentists can incorporate a charitable donation to the Foundation in their will through estate planning. Toothsavers oral health app sees large download rate

The download numbers for Toothsavers, the free mobile gaming app created by the Ad Council and the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives, continue to grow.  Through May, the app, which teaches kids ages 3-6 about the importance of oral health, had been downloaded in iTunes a total of 95,545 times worldwide, with 53,482 of those downloads coming in the U.S. What’s more, 81 percent of the sessions on the app are return users and the average session duration was three minutes and 27 seconds.

With the passing of Major League Baseball great Tony Gwynn from mouth cancer, CDA reminds dentists that there are many resources available to help their patients stop using tobacco and smokeless tobacco products. Though Gwynn's mouth cancer was never medically linked to the use of smokeless tobacco, he believed it was related to his cancer diagnosis. Experience shows that an oral cancer lesion, which often grows slowly and may be painless, can easily be overlooked by a patient who has "had this spot forever."

CDA and local dental advocacy efforts in recent weeks have prompted action from the state, led by Sen. President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg and the Department of Health Care Services, to ensure access to dental care performed under anesthesia when medically necessary. Inadequate Medi-Cal reimbursement rates for facility, anesthesia and dental services have forced many facilities statewide to either reduce or discontinue dental services for patients who need to be treated under general anesthesia.

Kids' Healthy Mouths program impacts classrooms

CDA Motorcycle Ride raises money for Foundation

The Fifth Annual CDA “Ken Sanford Memorial Motorcycle Ride” in September raised a record amount for the CDA Foundation and its programs. The motorcycle ride, during which dentists rode for 300-400 miles from Windsor through the Northern California coast and wine country, raised $9,250, which is $3,350 more than last year’s ride.
CAMBRA project seeks volunteers for research network

The CDA Foundation and the UCSF School of Dentistry are attempting to alter the way dentists prevent caries through a practice-based clinical trial, and volunteers are needed. The Caries Management By Risk Assessment (CAMBRA) Practice-Based Research Network formalizes the process to assess a patient’s risk for caries by examining various health and lifestyle factors as part of their regular dental checkup. The Foundation and UCSF are looking to expand an already established research network, which focuses on the implementation of CAMBRA.
Farmers Insurance Donates $15,000 for CDA Cares San Diego

The California Dental Association Foundation is pleased to announce a significant donation from new sponsor Farmers Insurance, which donated $15,000 to the Foundation in support of its CDA Cares volunteer dental program in San Diego scheduled Dec. 7-8. To date, with the help of 4,559 volunteers, CDA Cares has provided $4.4 million in care to 5,878 patients.

The September issue of the Journal of the California Dental Association focuses on the dentist’s role and obligations in caring for people with disabilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act (AwDA) and the Fair Employment and Housing Act in California. Articles include a review of the basics of the AwDA, a discussion of CDA resources to help members understand the applicability and scope of the AwDA laws, and a brief history of state legislation, including legislation in 2008 regarding certified access specialists and voluntary facility inspections to reduce accessibility claims.

The CDA Foundation raised nearly $17,000 in June at its Targeting Smiles Sporting Clays Tournament. The tournament raised money for the CDA Foundation and its programs through generous donations and a raffle and silent auction. Foundation takes CDA Cares to San Diego

The CDA Foundation is set to host its fourth CDA Cares free dental clinic in San Diego in December, and the need couldn’t be greater. The San Diego clinic is the first CDA Cares clinic to be held in Southern California — the first three were in Modesto, Sacramento and San Jose. The three clinics combined have provided $4.4 million in care to 5,878 patients.

The deadline to apply for the CDA Foundation’s 2013 Student Loan Repayment Grant is July 31. The Student Loan Repayment Grant helps students repay their educational loan of up to $35,000 per year for a maximum of $105,000 over three years in exchange for a commitment by recipients to care for the underserved.

In a four-part series, CDA is profiling members who have taken different approaches to how they practice in order to counter changes in the profession such as an overall drop in adults seeking dental care, the decline in the economy and real estate market, increased regulatory compliance, reduced reimbursement rates and more. The first article in the series features a dentist who practices in Stockton with a diverse population, including low-income patients. During the last five to 10 years, she has made several changes in her practice to become more efficient.

The ADA recently launched a nationwide campaign to combat what it calls “a disturbing dental divide in America.” The Action for Dental Health: Dentists Making a Difference is designed to counter staggering statistics such as these: 181 million Americans didn't visit a dentist in 2010, nearly half of the population over the age of 30 is suffering from some form of gum disease and nearly one in four children under the age of 5 already has cavities.
Legislature approves restoring Adult Denti-Cal

The effort to restore Adult Denti-Cal benefits is one step closer to reality after the Legislature voted on a new state budget plan. The funding, which is a result of the leadership exhibited by Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento), still needs the governor’s signature. Steinberg made the restoration of Adult Denti-Cal a top priority after his visit last August to CDA Cares in Sacramento.
CDA Cares serves thousands in San Jose

Preliminary numbers indicate 2,202 patients received free oral health care at the CDA Cares San Jose dental clinic over the weekend. Hosted by the CDA Foundation and CDA, the May 18-19 dental clinic provided more than $1.6 million in oral health care services to the underserved. The San Jose clinic, which was held at the San Jose Convention Center, was the third CDA Cares event. The three clinics combined have now provided $4.4 million in care to 5,878 patients.
CDA Foundation focused on maximizing donations

Since its inception more than a decade ago, the CDA Foundation has awarded scholarships to nearly 200 dental students and more than 500 allied personnel. And this is just one of the CDA Foundation’s accomplishments. As the charitable arm of CDA, the CDA Foundation’s mission is to improve the oral health of all Californians by supporting the dental profession in its efforts to meet community needs.

A recent decision by the Olivehurst Public Utility District to discontinue fluoridation of its community water supply is a reminder that debates concerning fluoride, as well as amalgam, continue to surface in California, and that dentists need to be aware of any activity in their communities. Local dental societies and their members can make an impact with something as simple as offering opinions or suggesting their local elected officials get more information on the subject from the dental society or CDA.
CDA Cares receives major donations

El Camino Hospital and Santa Clara County have donated a combined $45,000 toward the CDA Cares San Jose dental clinic. El Camino Hospital, which donated $20,000, is a nonprofit organization with hospital campuses in Mountain View and Los Gatos. The Santa Clara Board of Supervisors approved a $25,000 donation earlier this month.

Foundation helps fund Santa Clara community water fluoridation

The California Dental Association Foundation approved $500,000 from its restricted fluoridation funds to be used to support a new Santa Clara Valley Water District community water fluoridation system. The entire system will cost $6.6 million and the CDA Foundation, along with $1 million from The Health Trust and $900,000 from First 5 Santa Clara County, are contributing to this project. CDAF’s funds will go toward actual construction costs.

The Student Loan Repayment Grant program exists to relieve new dentists of a portion of their debt in exchange for a three-year commitment to practice in an underserved community.
