Surface Disinfectants and Waterline Cleaners

January 31, 2022 6152

Surface disinfectants and waterline cleaners sold and used in the state of California must be registered with the state Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR). Verify a product is registered in California before purchasing:

Surface Disinfectants Terminology

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which regulates surface disinfectants, and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), which issues infection control guidelines, use different terminology when categorizing surface disinfectants. The EPA utilizes the term “hospital disinfectant” as a name for one category of disinfectants it regulates. The CDC has determined that EPA-registered hospital disinfectants with the tuberculocidal claim are “intermediate disinfectants” and EPA-registered hospital disinfectants with a hepatitis B virus (HBV) and HIV label claim are “low-level disinfectants.” Disinfectants with a tuberculocidal claim are expected to kill HBV and HIV because the latter is easier to kill than the tuberculosis virus.

Federal law requires product users to follow explicitly the directions on the label.

A table of methods for sterilizing and disinfecting patient-care items and environmental surfaces is available online as Appendix C of the CDC for Infection Control in Dental Health Care Settings, 2003. Evidence-based guidelines on disinfectant use are contained in the 2008 CDC Guideline for Disinfection and Sterilization in Healthcare Facilities.

Decoding Pesticide Registration Numbers

To obtain a registration, a manufacturer must submit specific data about the safety and effectiveness of a product. The data plus proposed labeling is submitted to the EPA. Once approved, registration numbers are issued. Once registered in California, a product will be assigned a sequence of two (2) alphabetic letters. More information on the registration numbers is available on the DPR website.
