Paid Family Leave benefits expand to military families Jan. 1, 2021

December 02, 2020 5822

Military families will be eligible for Paid Family Leave benefits beginning Jan. 1, 2021. California’s Paid Family Leave program provides up to eight weeks of partial wage replacement benefits to employees who take time off work to care for a seriously ill family member or to bond with a new child.

The new claim type called Military Assist will provide wage replacement benefits to eligible Californians who need time off work for reasons related to the deployment of a spouse, registered domestic partner, parent or child to a foreign country.

Benefits will cover time taken off to attend an event or manage an essential need during a family member’s call to covered active duty. Such needs could include making child care or parental care arrangements, attending military-sponsored events or making legal or financial arrangements.

Dental practice owners are encouraged to update their employee handbooks regarding military exigency and Paid Family Leave benefits. Two new versions of the PFL claim form will be available for employers to give to employees on Jan. 1, 2021.
