New volunteer vaccinator opportunities available to California dentists

March 18, 2021 4107

New opportunities are opening for dentists who wish to support the statewide vaccine efforts. Dentists can now register to become a volunteer vaccinator and sign up for opportunities in their area through the state’s volunteer portal, My Turn Volunteer.

Statewide efforts to accelerate vaccination continue as the Biden administration directs states to make vaccines eligible to all adults in the U.S. by May 1. To make that happen, the administration is significantly increasing the weekly shipments of vaccines to states, community clinics and pharmacies with the goal of administering 4 million shots per day in the coming weeks.

Dental professionals play a role in helping the state meet the vaccination demand and can contribute by volunteering at vaccination sites and educating patients about COVID-19 vaccine safety and efficacy.

Through the My Turn Volunteer portal, dental professionals can browse nearby vaccination locations and sign up for volunteer shifts or be notified about future opportunities in their area if none are currently available.

Dentists who would like to begin volunteering must first complete four CDC training modules, including the new module for the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine by Johnson & Johnson.

CDA advises dentists to complete the newest training modules, even the dentists who are already volunteering and have completed the three previously required CDC trainings as part of the state’s emergency waiver. Dentists should also check with their volunteer site to determine if they need to provide a certificate of completion.

While dentists are currently limited to volunteering at mass-vaccination sites due to the limited supply of the vaccines, that could soon change with increased shipments of all three approved COVID-19 vaccines, including the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which can be stored under normal refrigeration, making it suitable to administer in the dental office.

CDA will keep members updated on any developments related to vaccine administration in the dental office. For now, dentists can continue volunteering at local vaccination sites and should work to increase public vaccine confidence among their patients.
