Effective Oct. 1, the Drug Enforcement Administration’s registration fee for prescribers will increase from $731 to $888 for a three-year period, according to the final rule published in the Federal Register last week.
California dentists are required to have a DEA registration if they prescribe, administer or dispense any controlled substances. The new fee applies to all new and renewal registration applications submitted on or after Oct. 1.
The summary of the final rule printed in the Federal Register Notice states that the fee increase is “necessary to recover the costs of its Diversion Control Program” related to the registration and control of the manufacture, distribution and dispensation of controlled substances. More information about the Diversion Control Program and the DEA’s authority to raise fees to recover operating costs is available in the notice.
The fee was last increased in 2012.
CDA advises any dentist who does not want to renew their DEA registration to first contact the dental plans with which they are contracted. Some plans require DEA registration as part of their credentialing process.
Prescribers can apply for registration, renew registration and report a change of address on the DEA website.
