Recorded web-based courses will no longer count as live C.E. for California dental professionals

November 23, 2021 3114

Quick Summary:

With the DCA's Dec. 31 termination of the waiver, regular state regulations on continuing education will apply to licensees. Those regulations require that licensees obtain no more than 50% of their required C.E. units through non-live instruction and do not allow licensees to use recorded webinars as live C.E.

In early September 2020 under a Department of Consumer Affairs waiver, dental professionals in California were permitted temporarily to use any number of recorded webinars as “live continuing education” if the courses are web-based and allow participants to interact with the presenter in real time.

The DCA issued this waiver (DCA-20-55) and other waivers under Gov. Gavin Newsom’s March 2020 State of Emergency proclamation, which allows state agencies and departments to ease restrictions and make additional resources available as part of the state’s pandemic response.

The DCA on Nov. 22 announced that the waiver officially titled “Order Waiving Restrictions on Internet-Based Continuing Education Training for Dental Professionals” will be terminated Dec. 31, 2021.

With the termination of DCA-20-55, the regular state regulations on continuing education will apply to licensees. Those regulations require that licensees obtain no more than 50% of their required C.E. units through non-live instruction and do not allow licensees to use recorded webinars as live C.E.

Other DCA waivers that pertain to dentists and dental professionals are still in effect. These waivers extend the C.E. completion deadlines for individuals whose licenses expired between March 31, 2020, and Sept. 30, 2021, and those with October 2021 license expirations. Both waivers are the result of CDA’s advocacy.

CDA Presents returns to Anaheim in May 2022

CDA’s all-virtual conventions in September 2020 and May 2021 and hybrid convention in September 2021 in San Francisco offered dentists and their teams dozens of continuing education courses in virtual and live formats with opportunities to watch recorded webinars for C.E. credit for several months after each convention.

CDA Presents will be held in person in Anaheim May 12-14. Watch for announcements and details in early 2022.
