The CDA Foundation is accepting nominations through March 31 for the 2023 Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni Faculty Award, which for 17 years has recognized faculty members for their contributions to the scholarly and creative activities of California dental students.
CDA members, including student members, can nominate eligible California dental school faculty for the award. Self-nominations are also welcome.
The late Dr. Dugoni “blazed an extraordinary path in the field of dentistry, overseeing the rise of a Northern California dental school to national prominence and, more importantly, expertly training generations of students and dentists with his stewardship of compassion, innovation and utmost care for people,” CDA wrote in 2020. A renowned leader in dental education, Dugoni served as dean of the University of the Pacific, Dugoni School of Dentistry from 1978 to 2006 and offered his leadership and expertise to dental colleagues in California and throughout the world.
In Dugoni’s name, the Foundation’s annual award acknowledges and supports exceptional leadership, innovation, collaboration, compassion, philanthropic spirit and integrity in dental education.
Nominees from all fields of study or dental specialties that enhance or support dental programs will be considered, but they must:
The nomination guidelines provide complete eligibility and selection criteria, required materials to include with the nomination form and allowable use of the monetary one-time award of an amount to be determined up to $5,000. The recipient will be notified of their award in November.
Marisa Watanabe, DDS, associate dean for community partnerships and access to care at Western University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine, received the 2022 Dugoni Faculty Award.
“Dr. Watanabe’s dedication to the community is unparalleled,” her colleague, Krystle Rapisura, DMD, said.
Known for her commitment to enhancing dental students’ education beyond the curriculum, Watanabe invites guest lecturers such as dental directors and oral health policymakers to cultivate prospective employer and mentor relationships. She has established affiliations with multiple sites, including Pomona Valley Regional Center and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, to ensure dental students have broad experiences outside of the classroom and clinic to ignite and nurture a passion for underserved populations and community dentistry.
“Dr. Watanabe constantly makes herself available to her students and, like a friend, she cheers them on and offers an ear to listen as well as words of encouragement,” Dr. Rapisura added. Read more about Watanabe in a recent CDA article.
Other recent recipients of the Dugoni Faculty Award include Elisa Chavez, DDS, in 2020, Richard Fredekind, DMD, in 2017 and Ronald Mito, DDS, in 2016.
The Foundation will accept nominations for the 2023 Dugoni Faculty Award through 11:59 p.m. Friday, March 31. Nominators can also access the nomination guidelines and biographies of past recipients on the award webpage.
