How do you see dentistry evolving amid the ongoing pandemic?
Dentistry and the world have experienced unprecedented challenges during the pandemic, but no one can deny the efforts to open dental practices after the shutdown. Dentistry is evolving toward the highest levels of safety, and equipment and techniques are evolving to improve the patient experience and results. Telephone triage and teledentistry are of great assistance in the pandemic situation. Virtual patient consults have been a game-changer in the last year and are convenient for both patients and practitioners. Air filtration systems and updated PPE to enhance safety have been added as routine means of protection.
Dentistry is applying a philosophy to maximize patients’ health and safety. We have been privileged by WesternU’s great efforts and organization in keeping students, faculty and staff extremely safe on campus.
Have your career aspirations changed due to COVID-19?
My career aspirations did not change due to COVID-19. In my humble opinion, this pandemic has made us realize the importance of infection control and maximizing the safety of our patients and staff. As a practicing prosthodontist, I have been keen on restoring function and esthetics for my patients and I cannot wait to again start fulfilling my dream.
What has been your most memorable dental school moment or experience so far?
My most memorable dental school experience was being in clinic after the shutdown. Procuring a dental license in the U.S. after practicing as a prosthodontist in Cairo, Egypt, has made me appreciate the technology and new trends in recent materials that were not present when I received my bachelor’s, master’s and PhD.
What has been the most rewarding thing about working on patients?
The most rewarding thing about working on patients is changing their dental IQ and spending the time and effort to educate patients about their dental conditions and the different options they have to improve their dental health. It’s also very satisfying to witness the transformation in function and esthetics in full-mouth rehabs after an extended treatment plan.
What’s one thing about dental school you wish your friends who aren’t in dental school could understand?
Dental school can be stressful sometimes, especially when the area that we work in is usually measured in millimeters! The one thing I wish my friends who aren’t in dental school could understand is probably dental terms and nomenclature.
What is your favorite comfort food?
Dark chocolate.
If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with the extra time?
My all-time favorite thing to do is photography of all types, like portrait, macro, travel and street photography, as well as dental photography.
Why are you #CDAproud
I was a member of CDA even before I become a dental student at WesternU. I always admired the association’s support and its ability to provide organized care for our community for 150 years. I am keen on attending CDA Presents. In 2019, I had the chance to volunteer at CDA Cares in San Bernardino to give back to our community. Thank you, CDA, for giving us the chance to witness the change we would love to see even throughout hard times, including the pandemic.
