CDA resources will help dentists comply with state order requiring COVID-19 vaccination or regular testing

CDA has developed resources to help members comply with the California state order issued July 26 requiring health care workers either show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or submit to regular testing. The resources include a sample mandatory vaccine policy, self-certification of employee vaccination status and accommodation request forms.

Dental offices and dental staff are included in the new state order. Dentist employers must document verification that their workers are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Dental staff who do not provide proof of vaccination must be tested weekly for COVID-19 and will be required to wear surgical masks, at minimum.

The statewide policy takes effect Aug. 9 with full compliance required by Aug. 23.

Employers should develop a plan for tracking employees’ weekly test results and, if necessary, conduct workplace contact tracing, and they must report the results to local public health departments when required. The state does not require a specific tracking mechanism.

Dentist employers can also use CDA’s Sample Employee COVID-19 Vaccination Tracking Form updated in June to comply with the revised Cal/OSHA Temporary Emergency Standard. The form can be used together with the self-certification form to track each employee’s vaccination status, including dates of vaccination, vaccine brand or type and if the employee declined the vaccine.

FAQ addresses dentists' common questions about state order

CDA last week also published an FAQ addressing members’ common questions about the state’s public health order and will regularly update the FAQ as CDA obtains answers from the Newsom administration about how dental offices will implement the new requirements, particularly around employee testing.

CDA continues to advocate on behalf of members the importance of public health policies that balance the need to increase vaccine rates against the ability for dental practices to continue providing care to Californians.
