On March 31, California dentists with license renewals between March and June 2020 were granted a Sept. 30 extension to complete C.E. requirements for license renewal, but on Aug. 27 the Department of Consumer Affairs issued a new waiver giving licensees until Feb. 27, 2021, to complete required C.E. and testing for license renewal.

On March 31, California dentists with license renewals between March and June were granted an extension until Sept. 30, 2020, but on Aug. 27, the California Department of Consumer Affairs issued a new waiver giving all California-licensed dental professionals through Feb. 27, 2021, to complete the required C.E. and testing for license renewal.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the director of the DCA has been granted the authority to waive any requirements for licenses issued under the agency. As the result of CDA advocacy efforts, the DCA director’s first order temporarily waived continuing education requirements needed to renew a license for individuals whose licenses expire between March 31 and June 30, 2020. Licensees were to satisfy any waived C.E. requirements by Sept. 30, 2020 under that first waiver. The DCA's Aug. 27 waiver gives California-licensed dental professionals through Feb. 27, 2021, to satisfy the waived C.E. requirements.

The waiver does not change license-renewal expiration dates.

While this is an imperfect solution for all licensees impacted by COVID-19 containment efforts, it is an important step that the state has taken swiftly. CDA will continue advocacy efforts for additional extensions as the COVID-19 disruption continues to impact dentists.

CDA member options for continuing education

In an effort to help members obtain C.E. in a timely manner, CDA is providing access to audio recordings from prior CDA Presents and mandatory C.E. courses at no charge to members and their dental teams. CDA will also offer several live online C.E. courses featuring some of the topics that had been scheduled for CDA Presents Anaheim. Details on those webinars will be shared with members by end of day Friday, April 3.
