Course Description:
Microorganisms such as bacterial, viral and fungal organisms cause primary and opportunistic infections which can affect the oral
cavity. The most common conditions caused by microorganisms in the oral cavity are dental caries, gingivitis and periodontitis.
However, numerous other conditions with infectious etiology can involve the tissues of the oro-facial region. Viruses such as
Herpes simplex virus, Human papilloma virus, Coxsackie virus, Epstein-Barr virus; bacterial and fungal organisms such as those
present in the oral flora as well as acquired pathogenic bacteria and fungi can result in infections with oral presentations. Patients
with these infections often consult dental care professionals. |

We do what we were taught in dental school despite time and research passing us by. We sometimes jump on the bandwagon because something sounds good but may be of dubious scientific backing. In this presentation, we'll look at commonly held but not scientifically based myths in kids's dentistry that have been perpetuated by dentists and the "Lay" media for years (Including many old wives' tales). These will include local anesthesia, restorations and crowns and the infamous MID and what it really means, endodontics and preventive dentistry, growth and development, and behavior management. We'll look at the difference between common sense, science, and factless fantasy. 4 CE Units

Fear of the dentist is one of our most common fears. Many patients avoid seeking dental treatment because of these fears. Children are no exception.
In this program, Dr. Malamed will review the two most commonly employed management techniques for dental fear and anxiety: the oral route of drug administration (e.g., triazolam [Halcion]) and inhalation (N20-02).
We will compare their efficacy and safety, as well as their utility in the pediatric dental patient. |

Local anesthesia forms the backbone of pain control techniques in contemporary dental practice. The subject of pain control in dentistry has undergone a recent renewal of interest, a renaissance. In this course, Dr. Malamed will present an in-depth discussion of the problem in achieving MANDIBULAR ANESTHESIA.
The traditional ‘mandibular nerve block’ has one of the lowest success rates of major nerve blocks administered in the human body. Newer techniques, such as the Gow-Gates mandibular nerve block; Akinosi-Vazirani closed mouth mandibular nerve block; intraosseous anesthesia; periodontal ligament injection (PDL) and intraseptal techniques have been developed in an effort to improve success in this area. The local anesthetic articaine HCl has been demonstrated to have significant success when administered by mandibular infiltration in adults, while more recently the ability to buffer local anesthetic solutions has demonstrated potential to both increase the rate of onset of anesthesia as well as increasing its depth. These techniques will be reviewed in this program. |
