Platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) is an autogenous matrix derived from the concentration of the patient’s blood platelets. A simplified chairside procedure results in the production of a fibrin membrane that is capable of stimulating the release of many important growth factors involved during wound healing processes that take place after surgery. This course will provide a hands-on laboratory session and a live surgical demonstration to become proficient in the use of the L-PRF technology. |

Digital cameras and dental photography are a critical piece of today’s modern dental practice. It can be intimidating and overwhelming to think about and learn, especially for those who have not used a dSLR camera before. However, by understanding how to take quality pictures, you will increase case acceptance, enhance the value of your practice, and greatly improve the level of service you can provide for your patients. High quality digital photographs are extremely helpful for excellent laboratory communication, patient education, diagnosis, treatment planning, and documentation. In this course, we invite dentists of all skill levels to attend, whether you’ve never held a camera before or want to take your skill up a notch. Assistants and staff are also invited to attend with the doctor. We believe quality dental photography is a critical component to the modern practice, and this course will answer your questions and increase your confidence in this important skill. If you are looking to purchase a dSLR camera before the course, or have any questions regarding your current camera and it’s applicability for this course, please contact the CE office beforehand so we can help you decide. |

April 28-29, 2023
9:00 AM – 5:00 PM Friday and 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM Saturday
Dental caries in children remains the most prevalent chronic condition among US children and the most unmet health care need of poor children across the country. As much as 80% of caries incidence is experienced by only 20-25% of the population. Understanding the infectious nature of dental caries and the transmission of cariogenic microorganisms provides new insight to potential prevention strategies and restorative approaches. Many specific treatment techniques should be selectively prescribed depending on the patients’ caries risk..
Lecture Topics
Review the evidence-based knowledge behind our understanding of the cause and treatment of dental caries in children
Understand and develop comprehensive preventive treatment approaches based on the individual patient’s risk
Understand and develop restorative treatment plan based on the individual patient’s risk
Select the most appropriate restorative material for primary molars: Stainless Steel Crowns vs. Class II restorations
Understand and implement the most appropriate space management for early loss of primary teeth
Workshop
The hands-on workshop is for you to learn how to apply the benefits of the glass ionomer cements in your practice and how to restore the primary teeth that most other providers would extract. Extracting the anterior or posterior primary dentition is not always the best option when it can otherwise be restored. You will also develop and improve your skills on how to perform stainless-steel crowns in primary teeth.

The primary goal of pulp therapy is to maintain the integrity and health of the teeth and their supporting tissues while maintaining the vitality of the pulp of a tooth affected by caries, traumatic injury, or other causes. Especially in young permanent teeth with immature roots, the pulp is integral to continue root development. Long term retention of a permanent tooth requires a root with a favorable crown/root ratio and dentinal walls that are thick enough to withstand normal function. Therefore, pulp preservation is a primary goal for treatment of the primary and immature permanent dentition.
Lecture Topics
-Discuss the Complex Dentin-Pulp and the behavior of deep carious lesions
-Describe indications for vital and non-vital pulp therapy in primary teeth and immature permanent teeth
-Differentiate between available materials for pulp therapy in primary teeth and immature permanent teeth
-Describe indications for indirect pulp therapy, Cvek pulptomy, cervical pulpotomy, pulp regeneration, apexogenesis and apexification |

An Update to Dental Ceramics
Synopsis
90% of crowns and bridges are now fabricated from a ceramic material according to a report from one of the largest US dental laboratories. Ceramic materials do not handle the same as metal-based restorations and improper selection or handling can lead to premature failure. This course will teach you how to select and handle different types of ceramic materials that are currently used in dentistry that will be much less confusing than typical marketing rhetoric. The ability to bond these dental ceramics allows the practitioner to perform more conservative tooth preparations. As there are many different types of dental ceramics available (zirconia, lithium disilicate, porcelain, processed composite, etc), determining the correct protocol for each type of ceramic can be confusing. This lecture aims to simplify the process of bonding ceramics and provide the clinician with a protocol that can be used to bond any type of dental ceramic. In this course, we will review the best clinical practices based on research studies conducted at the UAB School of Dentistry and provide pearls for you to take back to the office.
Objectives
Review the different types of dental ceramic materials
Choosing a ceramic material for anterior restorations
Preparation and design considerations for posterior crowns and bridges
Strategies to adjust, polish and cut off ceramic crowns
Review the indications for bonding dental ceramics
Present a protocol for preparing the surface of ceramic crowns (ie etching, sandblasting, priming, cleaning)
Classify the types of cements used for adhesive bonding
Materials and Techniques to Improve Posterior Composites
Synopsis
Posterior composite restorations remain the bread-and-butter procedure of many general dentists. Although this procedure may seem trivial, there are many clinical factors which lead to a long-lasting restoration, including diagnosis, isolation, caries removal, cavity preparation, use of liner, matrix and wedge placement, bonding technique, composite placement, and finishing and polishing. This course aims to review the techniques for each of these steps based on current evidence.
Objectives
Discuss treatment guidelines for interproximal caries and caries removal endpoints.
Discover materials and techniques to promote a long lasting adhesive bond and create a well-adapted restoration.
Analyze matrix utilization and contouring instruments to achieve a tight and well-contoured contact.

|
Synopsis
Splint construction is a common procedure performed in a dental office and there are various design types and techniques for fabrication. When seating an acrylic splint utilizing a traditional lab processed technique, the contact markings on the splint observed in the mouth commonly do not replicate the design made in the lab. Because of this, the splint often requires considerable adjustment to duplicate the original lab design.
This presentation will discuss how to make a predictable additive printed splint, with a total operator time of 45 minutes that will guarantee complete splint seating. Discussion will include how to use software design to produce all the necessary occlusal contacts and how to record an accurate and predicable CR digital mounting. By following these procedures there will minimal adjustment time at the delivery appointment.
Objectives
Participants will be able to:
Identify the most common reasons a traditional lab processed splint technique has inaccuracies when delivered in the mouth
Learn the principles of muscle force management
Comprehend the principles of creating a protective, comfortable, and predictable occlusion in the splint design
Implement the use of digital technology through scanning the dentitions
Understand how the use of software can create a protective design with ease
Comprehend the process and simplicity of 3D additive printing
Discover the preferred use of splint materials
Be able to implement a recording of a digital centric relation bite registration

1st Course: Dental Malpractice Trends You Need to Remain Vigilant!
Course Overview - 2 hours with Ronald P. Goldman on June 1st.
The good news is that malpractice claims continue to decline. The bad news is that there are more attorneys wanting to handle malpractice cases against dentists than ever before. Also, the changes to the MICRA cap will likely lead to an increase in malpractice lawsuits. So, you need to remain vigilant. We will discuss those chronic problems that dentists seem to have regarding record keeping. We will explore good record keeping habits and how altering your records can destroy your defense in a case and jeopardize your dental license. Electronic record keeping will also be discussed. As for operative dentistry, we will examine real malpractice cases dealing with problem areas which dominate recent claims, such as implant placement and restoration, endodontic treatment sand traps, ortho in the hands of the non-orthodontist, and dealing with the patient who "NOs" it all.
Date of Course: Thursday, June 1st, 2023 Time: 6:00PM Location: SACDS Office - 405 Boulder Ct. Ste. #600 Pleasanton 94566 *Light dinner will be provided.
2nd Course: Death and Disability Planning
Course Overview - 2 hours with Julia Goldman on October 19th.
Most dentists handle the question of "what would happen to your practice if you were to die tomorrow" by answering that they do not plan on dying tomorrow. The problem is that when a dentist suddenly dies or becomes permanently disabled, their spouse and dental practice are not prepared to continue with the day-to-day operation of the practice and/or immediately engage a professional team to handle the sale of the practice. This course provides the dentist with basic information and forms necessary to ensure that his/her spouse can continue to maintain the practice or have a disability group take over day to day operation, and to quickly prepare the practice for sale to an associate, partner or to a third person through a practice broker.
Date of Course: Thursday, October 19th, 2023 Time: 6:00PM Location: SACDS Office - 405 Boulder Ct. Ste. #600 Pleasanton 94566 *Light dinner will be provided.

The dental education and the degree from our schools is what gave us the ability to be dentists and make a career out of Dentistry. Please join us for a unique and one-of-a-kind program where we bring 3 Deans of the Dental Schools in Northern California for an evening at Sacramento: Dr. Reddy from UCSF, Dr. Nadershahi from UOP and Dr. Keating from CNSU. Each of them will share their thoughts about the state of dental education and the challenges it faces in current times. They will also share their vision to guide the schools through the challenges and the work in progress in their respective schools to best prepare the dental student. In addition to listening to them you will also have an opportunity to interact with them for a Q and A. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to be a part of this special program. |

Course Description:
Root canal procedures have been easier to manage yet have become more complicated due to technological advancements and
increased knowledge of root canal systems in general. With the introduction of NiTi into dentistry and the development of different file
designs from the manufacturers, the dental clinician has been able to provide conventional routine endodontics in office at increasingly
efficient rates. In addition, clinicians are now aware and concerned of microbes at the apex as well as the complex anatomy of the
root canal system. The dental clinician’s job has become mechanically easier yet biologically more difficult; however, utilizing
technology such as NiTi, CBCT imaging, and irrigation solutions can aid in the success of endodontic therapy. This course will deal
with the complexity of locating canals, choosing methods to mechanically instrumenting 80-90% of teeth in an efficient manner,
biologically cleansing the entire root canal system, and hermetically sealing the apex and canal system to prevent failure.
Learning Outcomes
1) Gain tips for accessing, locating, and negotiating canals
2) Understand the rationale behind the utilization of hybrid techniques and perform them in a clinical setting
3) Understand biologic objectives and disinfection of the root canal system
Content Topic Areas
1) Demonstration of accessing extracted teeth and showing tips on how to locate 4th canal
2) Participants: Hands-on full instrumentation and complete irrigation and disinfection of extracted teeth
3) Participants: Hands-on obturation and sealing of the root canal system
*Please bring extracted and x-rays of already accessed teeth (minimum 3 molars and 3 bicuspid or anterior teeth). OK for
curvature and calcified. |
