The CDA Foundation strives to select faculty engaged in preparing students for a professional education that lays the groundwork for lasting achievement and responsible leadership in their careers and communities. Priority will be given to applications reflecting Dr. Dugoni’s vision of excellence in teaching and professional development, which includes the following:

  • Leadership: Individuals who participate in activities beyond the scope of their teaching assignments, serve as role models for their students and possess values that influence future involvement in the profession. This may include leadership roles in organized dentistry, a specialty or ethnic group, the American Dental Education Association, American Association for Dental Research, their alma mater or other associations.
  • Creativity/Innovation: Individuals who anticipate tomorrow’s needs and respond to those needs through visionary or innovative teaching methods designed to move dental education forward and motivate or engage students in their own professional growth. This may include new uses for technology, competency-based curriculum development, applied research techniques that benefit patients or enhance the quality of care, and inventive instruction models.
  • Collaboration: Individuals who reach beyond the classroom/clinic to create partnerships and unions that strengthen dental students’ experience and involves others in the future of dental education. This can include other schools, community groups, organized dentistry, corporate or business assistance, grant writing and individuals.
  • Philanthropic Spirit: Giving back of one’s time, talent and resources to the profession and the community are a vital part of a full life. Award recipients value philanthropy and assume an active role in sharing the bounty in their life with others.
  • Compassion/Integrity: Dr. Dugoni once said, “It will not do just to train the head and hands and leave the heart out.” Individuals who are treated with respect and dignity learn compassion, the need for tolerance and cooperation, and to take responsibility for their lives, communities and world in which they live.
