The Merchandising & Planning Director leads a team and is focused on driving the merchandising strategy for creating the right product mix, to maximize value for customers and profitability.  This role will have the primary responsibility of leading and directing the merchandising and inventory management functions for TDSC, including assortment management, product slotting, inventory forecasting and replenishment.  The TDSC team works fast and smart; our team is comprised of motivated self-starters and true team players that are absolutely integral to the growth of TDSC and our future success.  This position will play a strategic role within the organization, partnering with other subject matter experts across disciplines to develop a deep understanding of business needs to effectively translate that into increased sales and a better customer experience with product delivery, all while managing the overall investment in inventory.

Merchandising Strategy

  • Develop and drive strategy for making assortment decisions for new, discontinued, and seasonal products. Gross margin responsibility for top line sales, promotions returns and unit velocity for the
  • Directs online product selection, placement, and grouping with the goal of increasing sales and profitability.
  • Provide thought leadership to making assortment decisions given SKU limitations, inventory quantity, shelf-life and other factors.
  • Manage the day-to-day assortment decisions to add in new products and remove discontinued products in conjunction with stocking strategy.  Responsible for the accuracy of product content (image, descriptions, site indicators, etc.).
  • Identify niche products and new trends and help recommend products to be listed.
  • Provide oversight on analyzing sales data including rest of market data to determine optimal assortment for the including SKU rationalization to determine most productive assortment with available SKU space to ensure maximum sales and customer satisfaction; uses historical sales data to drive inventory and assortment decisions.
  • Become an expert in numerous product categories. Execute, build and refine product assortments to drive sales and financial goals for categories.
  • Ensure business analysis and monitoring process are in place to efficiently merchandise product, ensure optimal assortment/slotting, gather data on emerging trends, understand competitive marketplace and maintain positive partnerships with the Distribution Centers/Suppliers to drive overarching strategy. Provide oversight on variables affecting demand for products (i.e. category trends, manufacturer promotions, competitive products, seasonality, white labels, and retail consumption).
  • Build exceptional cross-functional relationships and business processes with key stakeholders; Develops and implements online sales or promotions in partnership with Marketing, assesses performance and modifies future sales or promotions as needed.

Inventory Management

  • Develop and drive strategy for managing inventory. Responsible for hitting inventory management and replenishment targets including but not limited to shrinkage, out of stock/delayed orders, and forecast accuracy.
  • Execute periodic inventory reviews using safety stock setting methodology to ensure active management of inventory to balance service level risk and working capital. Ensure system accuracy within the ERP system
  • Manage the inventory for large numbers of SKUs and categories where inventory management decisions are based on forecasting and/or replenishment triggers (safety stock).
  • Manage and provide thought leadership on key inventory management processes such as reviewing forecast alerts and orders, analyzing statistical data, and generating forecasting solutions.
  • Provide oversight into replenishment quantities based on forecasts, sales data, promotional plans, seasonality, perishability, and inventory needs.

Supplier Management

  • Owns supplier and manufacturer relationship and components of that relationship – access to product lines, broadness of catalog/offering, partnership on promotions and product launches, etc.; manages alternate product strategy with multiple vendors and dual sourcing where applicable
  • Support the procurement strategy to reduce costs and drive efficiencies through optimization of sourcing processes, materials and services inclusive of source-to-pay processes
  • Lead SIOP monthly meetings to drive operational effectiveness and cross-functional involvement
  • Lead supplier cost reduction plan and road map, delivering committed cost reduction and PPV targets
  • Execute high level supplier strategies to leverage and optimize relationships and ensure the best cost is attained
  • Oversee the complete contract lifecycle from negotiation through execution
  • Create cost saving opportunities through competitive bidding, negotiations, etc., where applicable, while maintaining ethical practices and win-win outcomes for both parties


  • Serve in a leadership role for various initiatives, including strategy development, vendor selection and management, and overall supply chain design
  • Responsible for all personnel planning, performance management and the departmental operating budget inclusive of proactively planning staff development and growth
  • Mentors, guides and offers positive reinforcement.
  • Breaks down deliverables into achievable tasks.

Required Education, Licenses & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 10+ years’ experience managing product content and digital assets.
  • 5+ years leading teams where responsibility included performance management of staff.
  • Experience with strategic planning, direction, and goal setting for a department in collaboration with senior management.
  • Improve process efficiency and ensure product content accuracy.
  • Strong communication skills including the ability to effectively articulate viewpoint to senior leaders and ability to write.
  • Strong financial acumen, including experience with the retail and cost methods accounting.
  • Strong understanding of forecast and replenishment methodology.
  • Ability to get results with large workload, competing demands, and working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft products.

Preferred Education, Licenses & Experience

  • Master’s degree, MBA.
  • APICS CSCP Certification
  • Experience with SAP S4Hana, SAP EWM
  • E-commerce experience in the healthcare industry
