CDA-Sponsored Legislation Clarifies Who Can Place Topical Fluoride Including Fluoride Varnish
On January 1, 2010, Assembly Bill 667 becomes law. CDA heard from many local dental disease prevention programs that they were unsure if it was legal for registered dental assistants to place fluoride varnish in public health programs. Sponsoring AB 667 was CDAs way of assisting dental professionals working in public health settings.
This CDA-sponsored bill clarifies existing law by specifying that any person may apply fluoride varnish and other topical fluoride treatments in a public health setting or as part of a state or local government program, in accordance with a prescription and protocol established by a dentist or physician. The bill is intended to expand access to fluoride treatments by eliminating any perceived limitations on who can apply them.
