Smokeless tobacco prevention summit convenes Oct. 16-18 in Sacramento

More than 400 national experts, health care providers and advocates will participate in the 9th National Summit on Smokeless Tobacco Prevention coming to the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Sacramento Oct. 16-18.

Individuals, organizations and agencies committed to reducing and eliminating the use of smokeless and other noncombustible tobacco products are encouraged to register to join the current coalition.

“Smokeless and non-combustible tobacco use is a rapidly evolving public health threat requiring greater leadership, a shift in research and funding priorities and local public action,” the summit website states. “The summit will allow attendees a variety of opportunities to connect with necessary resources, communicate with national, state and local leaders and to act with greater confidence and success.”

“Mining for gold: Developing partnerships for new and lasting change” is the theme of this year’s summit, which is coordinated by the nonprofit Health Education Council. Sessions include prevalence and trends, rural community engagement, e-cigarettes, vulnerable populations, media campaigns, a youth engagement panel and a spotlight on product flavors and marketing plus related policy solutions. Breakout sessions are scattered throughout the daily agendas.

Additionally, a special one-day “Taking Down Tobacco” youth advocacy training will be held Oct. 17.

The summit will provide continuing education units. Breakfast, two snack breaks and lunch are included with registration and served the first two days of the convention. A discounted student registration rate is available.
