Dentists must post sick leave law poster by Jan. 1

The effective date for employers to begin providing mandatory sick leave to all employees is July 1, 2015, or on the first day of employment for new employees – whichever is later.  CDA Practice Support is still monitoring developments and interpretations of the California Paid Sick Leave Law (AB 1522).

The California Dental Association is urging immediate steps to address critical issues with the state Denti-Cal program that is failing to provide adequate access to care for millions of low-income children who are at risk of developing dental disease. An audit issued by the Bureau of State Audits validates what CDA has experienced with the program for many years. The audit, California Department of Health Care Services: Weaknesses in its Medi-Cal Dental Program Limit Children's Access to Dental Care, states that nearly 56 percent of the 5.1 million children enrolled in Denti-Cal in 2013 did not receive any dental care last year. Legislative proposals from the California Dental Hygienists’ Association (CDHA) that would significantly change the supervision and practice of hygienists’ were released at a December meeting of the Dental Hygiene Committee of California (DHCC), and they appear very similar to the changes proposed by CDHA earlier this year that CDA strongly opposed. New licensure by portfolio set to be implemented

Dental students in California will soon officially be able to graduate with a “portfolio” model exam process over the course of their final year in dental school. In November, the Dental Board of California finalized the regulatory process of approval for the portfolio examination model and California’s dental schools can now begin the implementation process (it is not a requirement for the schools, however). This is the first licensure-by-portfolio-exam program in the nation. Read more >>

The Dental Board of California has released its 2014 Sunset Review Report to the state legislative bodies responsible for analyzing and approving the document. Areas of particular interest to CDA during the Dental Board’s sunset review process are ensuring the addition of statutory language that exempts treatment of a spouse or domestic partner from the definition of sexual misconduct and alternative licensure options, including regional and national examinations. Dental benefits education pays off for practices

In March 2014, CDA piloted the Dental Benefits Workshop, a two-day program for dentists that provided the necessary tools and insight into the challenging world of dental benefit plans. In attendance were 40 dentists who were hand-selected to participate in the pilot program based on several criteria, including number of years in practice, current participation level with dental benefit plans, practice demographics, etc. A six-month post-workshop survey of the March 2014 workshop attendees showed decreased claim denials and improved patient communication, among other things. Academy of Pediatrics tackles children's oral health

In a recent policy statement, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) acknowledges the significant impact dental caries has on the health of young children and the important role pediatricians play in dental disease prevention. The statement goes on to encourage pediatricians to conduct a risk assessment for caries by focusing on the key risk factors for dental caries. Read more >>

 

Dr. Russ Webb honored for lifetime of generosity

Russ Webb, DDS, was recently honored with the 2014 CDA Foundation Humanitarian Award for his lifetime of incredible generosity and his commitment to giving back. Webb was instrumental in the development of the CDA Foundation’s CDA Cares dental program, and has continued as a chair, a lead volunteer, a “chair-trainer” and a recruiter. He also chairs the fundraising committee for the Foundation. Read more >>
