Major sponsors make CDA Cares possible

The many dentists and dental professionals volunteering at CDA Cares Pomona will provide cleanings, fillings, extractions and a limited number of full and partial dentures to around 2,000 patients on Nov. 21-22 at the Pomona Fairplex. And it couldn’t happen without the support of the many sponsors.

Five major sponsors, Carestream Dental, Western Dental, Henry Schein Dental, Benco Dental and TDIC will largely support the CDA Foundation’s Pomona clinic.

“We truly appreciate the significant donations from all of our Pomona sponsors because it assists us in providing much-needed dental care and oral health services to patients seeking help at our event,” said Don Rollofson, DMD, chair of the CDA Foundation.

Carestream Dental, which has supported the program since 2012, brings digital panoramic radiographic equipment valued at $50,000 to Pomona. The company also continues to provide a full staff to support that area of the clinic.

Having volunteered at almost every CDA Cares event, Shauna Holliday, director of U.S. regional sales for Carestream Dental, has seen firsthand the overwhelming number of people who arrive for dental care.

“Providing Carestream Dental digital equipment, as well as a team of Carestream Dental volunteers, enables doctors to make faster diagnoses, and that translates into less waiting for patients,” Holliday said. “It’s so valuable to get out into the community and see how something like a digital radiograph, which has become routine at most yearly checkups, can make such a difference in a person’s life. We know that about one-third of Americans have difficulty accessing dental care and events like CDA Cares seek to change that.”

Carestream Dental is an industry-leading dental equipment company that focuses on imaging systems and practice management solutions for dental professionals across the world.

Another industry leader in dentistry is Western Dental, which provides care to more than 750,000 patients annually across California and through affiliated practices in Arizona and Nevada, has donated the first of two $50,000 pledges in support of the upcoming CDA Cares volunteer dental events.

“We are extremely pleased to support the CDA Cares event in Pomona as well as future events," said Simon Castellanos, Western Dental’s chief executive officer.

Shortly after he took the CEO leadership role with Western Dental, Castellanos had an opportunity to see and volunteer at the CDA Cares event in Solano County in April. He was impressed and inspired, and saw an organization with a shared mission and purpose to Western Dental. He also saw an opportunity to focus the company’s own grassroots employee enthusiasm to give back.

“In addition to the financial contribution from Western Dental, our doctors and nonclinical employees alike are excited to volunteer and participate directly in the great impact these events have for Californians in need,” Castellanos said.

With the help of thousands of community volunteers, like those from Western Dental, as well as dentists and dental professionals, CDA Cares has provided $7.5 million in care to more than 10,000 Californians since 2012.

Henry Schein Dental is donating around $25,000 in supplies to CDA Cares Pomona. This is the company’s largest donation to a CDA Cares event to date. Henry Schein provides health care products and services to office-based dental, medical and animal health practitioners. The company also serves dental laboratories, government and institutional health care clinics and other alternative care sites.

“When I was first approached by the CDA Foundation with the opportunity to support their outreach program, I knew it was an opportunity we could not let pass by,” said Glenn Showgren, California zone general manager at Henry Schein Dental. “Social outreach is very important to every Schein team member and we are honored to be able to participate in touching the lives of hundreds of patients in need by partnering with CDA Cares.”

Since 2003, Henry Schein Cares, the company's global corporate social responsibility program, has donated oral health care products through the CDA Foundation's Dental Materials and Supplies Grant.

“Henry Schein Cares is the driving force supporting what the CDA clinic does and many other Henry Schein-supported dental and medical outreach efforts locally, nationally and globally,” Showgren said. “Henry Schein is firmly committed to helping local dental professionals give back to their communities and meet these needs — from hygiene kits used in basic oral hygiene instruction at elementary schools with high at-risk populations, to traveling clinics like CDA Cares Pomona, where we are able to donate supplies to be used for direct patient treatment.”

Another major sponsor traveling to CDA Cares Pomona is Benco Dental, which, like Carestream, has supported the CDA Foundation’s efforts since the first CDA Cares program in Modesto in May 2012. Benco’s significant level of support has come in the form of much-needed supplies, including burs, anesthetics, needles, sutures, Prophy Paste and Prophy Angles, disinfecting wipes and personal protective equipment such as disposable gowns, masks and gloves.

“Participating gives our team the opportunity to directly care for and support the most deprived of dental health care in our communities,” said Brian Evans, Benco’s director of sales – west. “We believe that oral health plays a significant role in overall well-being and that by joining together with the CDA Foundation we can begin to change lives and bring healthy smiles to our neighborhoods.”

Benco Dental is a privately owned, full-service dental distributor that has remained a family business since it was founded in 1930 by Benjamin J. Cohen, a Russian immigrant living in Philadelphia. During Benco’s history, the company has grown from a single storefront location in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., into a dental distributor with more than 50 regional showroom locations and five distribution centers servicing more than 30,000 dental professionals in 40-plus states.

TDIC, the insurance company created by CDA for member dentists that provides professional liability, workers’ compensation and other insurance products and services, also has supported the CDA Cares program since it first began.

In addition to helping reduce barriers to dental care for those in need, the CDA Cares program also educates the public and policymakers about the importance of good oral health and the need for an adequately funded dental safety net, including a state dental director who can develop programs to improve the oral health of Californians.
