Reduce overhead with CDA endorsed exam gloves
They’re something used in dental offices every day, in fact, thousands of times a year, to reduce the risk of infection – exam gloves. According to CDA Endorsed Program PureLife Dental, the average dental practice with three chairs goes through 14 boxes of gloves per week – which adds up to 60 boxes per month, 720 boxes per year, or 72,000 gloves – costing more than $10,000 a year.
Proposed budget expands Medi-Cal eligibility
Acknowledging that California’s economy is improving but still uncertain, Gov. Jerry Brown on Jan. 10 released a 2013-14 budget proposal that calls for expanding Medi-Cal eligibility as part of national health care reform, but makes no move to address calls from legislative leaders to restore optional benefits, such as adult dental, that were cut in prior years in response to fiscal crises.

Team effort recruiting volunteers for CDA Cares clinic in San Jose
A CDA Cares clinic is scheduled for May 18-19 at the San Jose Convention Center and a team effort is underway to recruit volunteers. With its Bay Area location, the clinic, which allows dentists and dental professionals to provide cleanings, fillings and extractions to Californians who experience barriers to care, will have access to at least five dental components for volunteer recruitment.
Remembering ‘Lion of a man’ Dr. J. David Gaynor, TDIC founder
Dr. David Gaynor, past CDA president and co-founder of The  Dentists Insurance Company, passed away January 14 at the age of 81, following  complications from pneumonia.
New online reporting application for CURES program
The state Department of Justice announced that Atlantic Associates has implemented its online direct dispense reporting application for data submission to California’s prescription monitoring program, Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System (CURES).
As part of a membership program, recruiting a new CDA member can result in $100. Under the program, members who recruit a new member to CDA get $100 within two weeks after the applicant is accepted as a CDA member — individuals who recruit five new members in a membership year will receive $500.
To help dentists make their employees more aware of what is expected of them and prevent misunderstandings about policies, the Practice Support Center has updated its Sample Employee Manual for 2013. Available for download on cda.org/compass, the manual is exclusively for use by dental practices. The manual covers everything from confidentiality to performance evaluations to exposure control.

The task force, which is identifying strategies to enhance the position of providers and patients in the dental benefits marketplace at the request of the 2011 House of Delegates, heard from Gary Pickard, director of plan relations at Pacific Dental Services; Jeffrey Parker, CEO, and Burt Arthur, CFO of Sarrell Dental Center in Alabama; and Michael Grossman, DDS, former president and CEO of First Dental Health.

New dentists today are entering a different type of job market than the dentists of a generation ago faced out of college. Foundation helps fund Santa Clara community water fluoridation
The California Dental Association Foundation approved $500,000 from its restricted fluoridation funds to be used to support a new Santa Clara Valley Water District community water fluoridation system. The entire system will cost $6.6 million and the CDA Foundation, along with $1 million from The Health Trust and $900,000 from First 5 Santa Clara County, are contributing to this project. CDAF’s funds will go toward actual construction costs.
